Stock muffler? If so they all need to go. This will be our next axle bolt fiasco. I warped two clamshell parts before going to accufab. Engine temps dropped 20 deg. I'm sure engine compartment temps dropped much more. Nothing has warped since replacing the muffler.
I highly doubt it. Even if it is the stock muffler, they ran the car 500 miles at max speed in 5th gear without incident. The muffler isn't going to get much hotter than that or the brutal AZ desert testing the car went through.

I don't think the muffler could cause that fire - I think it had to be a fuel leak of some sort to do that kind of damage. My Safecraft fire suppression system is supposed to arrive today:eek I feel better about it now!

A friend has removed his cats and uses a Borla. His car belches flames as well. My car has a MMP pipe and the cats. My car isn't a flame thrower.
Question: Is the difference the tune or do the cats help kill the flames. I would think a flame would have a easier time exiting a Accufab style pipe than the Borla. If you recall the Stillen GT doesn't run cats and is a flame thrower as well.

It depends...I don't know if there is a difference in the muffler we have and the one the europe cars have but I know of one that got burned a little by the muffler over there...so it can happen. That car looks like the hot dog cooker that just lit it up...I say he isn't running the stock muffler but that picture sure does look like he is...Does anyone know the car?

Looking at some of those other photos, the cars rear is clearly not on fire but the exhaust flame appears to being sucked into the plastic bumper area. Plastic bathed in fire is going to ignite.

A Safecraft will help put the fire out, but at speeds the halon will be blown out of the engine compartment quickly; the tank emptied in less than a minute. If fuel or oil is still leaking near the any hot exhaust parts the fire will re-ignite. You have to cut the fuel and oil pressure as soon as possible after the fire starts to have a good chance to keep the fire out.
I think that is why someone mentioned that most car fires start while the car is at rest. That makes sense, since a while the car is moving air flow quickly vent the combustible vapors out before they can ignite. When you slow down the vapors concentrate.
I speculate that something went wrong, oil leak maybe? My car with a borla does shoots flames, but nothing to melt the car. Again as DBK mentioned, nothing is probably worse than the testing that Ford did in AZ with a stock muffler...........

Have you seen the stock exhaust on the Canadian cars? Because of the bumper extension the pipes actually don't clear the plastic cover on the bumper. Don't think that got tested at Arizona and as someone said heat + plastic = not good.::frown
