Any way to track down original tranny replaced by warranty?

One of my GTs had its transmission replaced under warranty. I have all the documents from the original owner that had the work done. I noticed that the tranny doesn't have the Vin stamped on it like my other GT has.

Id like to track it down if possible, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Good luck, I would say that's going to be near impossible. Figure out which dealership did the warranty work and ask them if they sent it back to ford or something else. That's your only hope....

Speaking with some familiarity on this issue, the dealers to my knowledge were required to return the originals to Ford

Was there a core return required on the transaxles? If so, my concern would be that it was returned to be rebuilt as a service part with the VIN removed.

There was a core charge so warranty repair would have been returned

Yes, core were usually sent back to Ford, but not always. I know of several that were warrantied and the cores were not returned.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I do have the paperwork so I will contact the dealer and see what I can turn up.

It is pretty near impossible. I haven't formally introduced myself but I have spoken with a few of you personally (including Shelby). I am a factory rep for Ford. The transmissions have to be returned to the WPAC to determine if they are in fact damaged and able to be warrantied. Otherwise, the dealer would receive a charge back. Given the length of time, it is unlikely they would be able to locate this transmission.

This opens up an interesting topic... if we have a failure to a to a major component on our cars should we do everything possible to repair the original part so the car stays VIN "numbers matching" or is this not important for the future value of the car? (Apologies for highjacking this thread but it's an interesting topic that I haven't seen discussed on this forum).

Not necessarily on the GT but for other cars (like original Mustangs), I've heard of people swapping the innards of a replacement transmission into the body of the old one so as to preserve that "matching numbers". Of course at the day, that wouldn't have been done.

Actually that was my next question. I cant imagine it will, especially if you have the paperwork from a Ford dealer showing what all was done. But I might be wrong.

Ford sells most of their warranty returns as scrap. I bought a complete GT motor from one of the scrappers. The motor was replaced under warranty at a dealer because of an idle concern. Evidently, the owner did not care that the new motor did not match his VIN. I am just going to sit on the motor. The motor is complete from alternator to starter even the original clutch. The best story is when Ford Parts was moving from Brownstown, Mich to a new facility. They left all the replacement GT bare blocks outside and all of the steel cylinder liners rusted. Blocks were all junk because the rust pits were too deep to hone out.

I would think documentation, documentation, of all happenings to the GT would usrfice as to the history of your vehicle. As a former Ford Dealer, you would never be able to locate warrantied parts.
