An interesting GT story

This is something I have never seen mentioned here that I can recall. I've never even heard any Ford people talk about it, and certainly the topic has come up.

Everyone knows the story with the Sonic Blue car. Chris Theodore had Ford use the sonic blue paint code from the Ford catalog to have a custom painted Ford GT done at the factory. When certain people found out they said no way, and the car was subsequently auctioned off at the Cattle Baron's ball for around $330k. It is currently for sale.

Yesterday while I was at SEMA I ran into Neil Ressler. Neil was brought back just to consult on the Ford GT program as the senior technical adviser. I've had more than one Ford GT team person tell me that if it weren't for Neil, the car wouldn't be what it was. He's the man that hand assembled the best they could find for the program (and he's not only a mechanical engineer but he holds a PhD in physics, so he's by all acounts a brilliant guy). We were talking about the cars, and his personal car came up.

Apparently, during the Theodore Sonic Blue incident, Ressler's midnight blue car was being built. He told them to have it painted stripeless. Somehow, at the 11th hour he got in and he got it painted midnight blue...with silver stripes! He managed to get the car out of the factory and in his possession and subsequently retired. The car is still in his possession and he drives it whenever he gets the chance. He definitely wants to come to the events so he will hopefully have it at Rally IV.

So that's the story. There is a midnight blue with silver stripes painted and delivered from the factory. You learn something new everyday.

:cheers

That is a cool story and an interesting combination. I often thought a Red/Gold would make a real nice combo as well - similar to the GT350H of the 60's...

Can someone do a photoshop of both?

You know, I had a guy tell me that he saw a blue with silver stripes. I told him he was crazy, but guess the jokes on me. Would love to see pics also! :thumbsup
Good Story

It would be fair to say, the most valuable production FGTs are blue! :biggrin

Frank would say red is the fastest, but I say blues are more valuable.

Neil brought that GT to its first public showing a couple of years ago (2005) to a car show in AnnArbor, MI. The silver stripe was very sharp looking, making the blue appear to be something other than the midnight color. Great guy to talk to as well, incredibly bright and as Dave mentioned, one the key minds behind the program. Hand picked some of the key folks for the GT program that we have come to know through the rallys - Mark McGowen, Dennis Breitenbach - now of the GT Guys, and others.

Yea.....

it Would Be Fair To Say, The Most Valuable Production Fgts Are Blue! :biggrin

Frank Would Say Red Is The Fastest, But I Say Blues Are More Valuable.

I was lucky enough to talk to Mr. Ressler for an hour or more at the Ford dinner at Rally I. Very, very nice guy. He mentioned his car to me, but at the time, with so many cars still available, I didn't really make note of it. Now I get it. Thanks DBK. He is a really classy guy, and, I believe, Csaba's neighbor. Said he wanted to start on a three window coupe in his real retirement. Has he done it yet?

that is really a neat story, makes you wonder if there are other cars with unique anomolies that have been delivered from the factory. like shelby said, we think we know a lot about these cars, but its nice to get surprised once in while.:cheers

Thanks for the information Dave!
Your access to GT team members is "priceless" and what makes this Forum so special.
I'm sure others close to the program all have their stories to tell. Keep those nuggets of information coming!
We all enjoy hearing....

Thanks for telling this story Dave, and let me echo the sentiments expressed by others for you (and other Forum members) to keep these anecdotes coming. As a collector of old Jaguars, believe me as time passes it becomes exponentially more difficult to unearth and document things like this.

Do you know the VIN of the Blue/Silver car?
