America's S7 Supercar...the end of an era!

It would appear that Saleen has ended production of the S7. The Saleen management told me when I was with them to do the Car and Driver 0 to 200 mph to 0 event that they would end production in 2007. They would be unable to meet the government's crash requirement for 2008.

It would have cost them 5 million dollars and destroying several S7 with no guaranties that they could pass their requirements. If they didn't pass they would have to send another 5 million again and destroy several more S7 will still no guaranties they would pass again.

There is approximately about 78 or more S7 in the world today, part of those are race cars that never see the road.

The Saleen S7 is pure automotive sex, Steve Saleen was responsible for making one of the most glorious cars in the world.

I went to a Farrari car show where a S7 was on display with the Farraris, there was constantly more people around and more pictures taken of the S7 than the Enzo. The Farraris are certainly one of the world finest cars, but the public was more impressed with the Saleen S7.

It will be difficult or nearly impossible in the future to build an low production Supercar and meet the government regulations because of the insanely expensive costs.

If you own one ...you are in one of the most exclusive Supercar ownerships in the world!

So what does that mean... the current S7's should sky rocket in price.

I know of two that are for sale locally (Chicago / Milwaukee area). They are both owned by the same person who is the original owner and one is the first S7 road car ever.

PM me if interested and I can put you in touch with the owner.

Exclusivity of Supercars doesn't automatically guarantee price appreciation as evidenced by the Jaguar XJ220. The S7 is very special, but IMO Saleen didn't leave anything on the table in the way of significant foreseeable appreciation for the owners...except some of the 2nd owners who bought them on the cheap. :cheers

The next American Super car and they are still in business, with the cars getting better every year. The new Mosler MT900s, I may pick it up on Friday or Monday then I will let everybody know how good it really is.

By the way, it is sad to see the awesome S7 go away - beautiful cars indeed.

Bummer.

Gentlemen,

I hate to see the S7 go, even though it's out of my price range and my supersized butt is definitely out of its cockpits size range. I remember crawling into the driver's seat of one at Saleens facility at the Detroit rally. Very cramped in the seat and in the driver's foot well. And when it came time for me to get out, I thought the local fire department might need to use the "jaws of life" to extract me. Still, like the beautiful mansions in Salzburg, Gulfstream G5's, and oceangoing yachts, I like knowing such things are out there. And I have a particular fondness for these items if they are made in America.

The S7's premature demise is the result of ever more intrusive governmental regulations, rules, and restrictions, that are stripping us of our freedoms incrementally and steadily. I am certain that the S7 is more crash worthy than motorcycles which, I assume, will still be legal to manufacture and sell in America. But the all powerful unelected bureaucrats installed an insulated from accountability by the socialist and all controlling congressmen we continue to elect, have decided we need to be safer and are too stupid to choose the type of car we would like to drive. :bored

The Saleen S7 had a genuine racing pedigree, a beautiful shape, and who knows, perhaps someday I might lose 50 pounds, make a lot more money, and enlarge my garage capacity with a couple quality lifts. I have never seen one on the street and I doubt I would ever own one. Still, it saddens me to see it go.

There you go. And don't forget the 30ft wide door sill you have to pole vault over to get into the car in the 1st place. One can't help but think the car was designed with only the "younger set" in mind.

Granted, I sat in one very shortly after having bigtime skeletal trauma and I wasn't very "flexable" at that time ... but still, sitting with my feet wedged into a 1 foot sq. "pedal box" and angled out 30* to the right didn't strike me as being too comfy for "the long haul" ...or even SHORT hauls for that matter.

But be all that as it may, the S-7 is UNQUESTIONABLY one of the most outrageous cars ever made. By anybody. Anywhere. At anytime. At any price. And it was made HERE!:usa

Chip, they make the seat custom to the owner's butt, the S7 at Troy was made for someone with short legs and extremely small butt. Mine S7's seat fits me just fine(6'1" 245lbs).

What fun! The Mosler and Saleen cars. Now Saleen is gone again and some highly leveraged fools will certainly ruin the operation while dragging the name thru the dirt. Not sure bout it, but I bet that's what happens.

Anyway, a guy brought a Saleen race car circa 1992 to the track at VIR last weekend. The little fox body had a blower, carbon fiber fenders, hood, 3 pc. wheels, custom touches all over. I was giddy as it reminded me of the cars I lusted over "back in the day." Just like I read "Hemmings" when I was 9-11 yrs old when a good GT350 was $10k, this Saleen was "all race" and had my attention. Great fun and memories. Most will never understand the love of a cheesy fairmont based old ford product. But when it was your own "Ferrari," then the passion for all this nonsense makes sense . . . S7 included! Wow.
