A/C question

I noticed when I have the air on in the car there is a click noise coming from the dash area. The click happens about every six or seven seconds. Sounds like a solenoid clicking. When the air is switced off, no more clicking. It does not seem related to the compressor, as I can hear when that comes on (when idling). The air cools fine. Is this normal or should I have it checked out? Tried search function but didn't see anything pertaining to this.

Thanks,
Rick

Kayvan,

Thanks, what can I say, I grew up in my Dad's Ford dealership. When I was nine years old, I can still remember being in awe of the Shelby's coming into the dealership. Had my first ride in my Dad's demo, a 427 AC street Cobra. I was scared to tears, but never forgot the experience. My other favorite was the 65/66 GT350's. Fun to make dreams come true:banana

That sounds like the noise that is made by a broken plastic gear inside the Blend Door Actuator.

GTCharlie,
Have you heard of this happening before on a GT? Anybody else hear of this problem? If it is normal for these cars to do this, I'm OK with that. It seems a little odd to be clicking every 6 or 7 seconds though. Anyone else?

Thanks,
Rick

I have not heard of this specific concern on a GT but blend door actuators are a common failed part on many Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. They have the same symptom that you are experiencing. The GT has four actuators and are not interchangable with any other vehicles.

I know exactly what you are talking about. One of my GTs has made that noise when the A/C is on since it was new. It definitely sounds like a solenoid or something, though it does cycle independent of the compressor. Haven't really paid it much attention lately. Maybe the Heffner exhaust has something to do with that. :lol

Well Chris, you are a big help. If the noise is bothersome, you just jump in your other GT that is clickless:biggrin. So I take it you are not worried about the clicky car. I just want to make sure this isn't part of a bigger problem before warranty goes away.

A/C clicking

Its not likely a blend motor. If it were, it would only click when you change temp. It may be a condenser fan control relay in the smart junction box just forward of the passenger foot board. I doubt there's any cause for concern.

Rick-

No I am not worried about it, but that doesn't mean it should not be worried about. :wink All I know is it has been that way since day one and now 2 1/2 years later everything is still fine. Perhaps if you took it to the dealer so they could document the noise before the warranty expired and then told them you would live with it until/unless it got more serious? If you do decide to have it looked at I would love to hear what they discover.

Ryan's post just above sounds like a reasonable explanation to me.

My car does the same. I thought that was the way the A/C worked. Amazing though, the dealer could never hear it.

I have had a few Gts with a/c door motors making noise. The motors are snapped onto the gear drive section of actuator assy which moves the door inside the evap case. I had to replace all 3 motors on a Gt just last week which involves removing the dash. if it's not that noisy then I would let it go. The dash removal, although not the hard, is a long process.

SFLGT is on the right track

SFLGT (my opinion) is on the right track (this not an unknown problem, but not common).
I would fix the problem sooner than latter. As it is the little details that make a fine auto.
And the HVAC system shares no common parts with other Ford units.
(Repair parts could be in short supply years from now)

(Info for restoration people - may need years from now)
“Vintage Air” is the supplier to Ford for the FGT HVAC system parts.
Few of the parts are similar to the units they sell for aftermarket hot-rod systems.
But most of the control electronics were new for the GT.
Vintage Air like all Ford suppliers are not allowed to sell outside the Dealer system.

My car made the exact same noise, annoying as hell. Ford changed the evaporator, expansion valve and fan motor, I doubt there was anything wrong with those components, but somewhere along the way the noise went away. Think about whether or not the noise bothers you enough to warrant taking your interior apart by someone who may not be capable of putting it back together the way its supposed to be.

That is why i said if the noise is not really bad or intermittent i recommend leaving them. I have advised Gt owners of doing both. I talked with the engineer at Vintage Air who designed the sys for ford when i had to change the 3 motors on the one i had in the shop last week. He said that they don't like to send parts to replace them because of tech. at some dealers that are not trained on the GT. I have been lucky enough to have worked on a good amount of GTs for different problems. I have a lot of owners in my area. The one i changed all 3 on i had no choice. the motors had stopped working and the car had some other wiring problems due to testing that had been done on it at ford. It was a very early built car.

part(s) on order

Last week when I had my GT in service for the bolt replacement and a few other items.I complained about this a/c related item...ticking sound.(every 8 sec or so).The tech apparently identified the problem and ordered a part. I did not pay any attn to the part description at the time. I am on holiday in NC but will advise the outcome after the part is in and the service performed upon my return to FL. I would suspect a few weeks...

Best Wishes for a Safe and Healthy New year to you and Yours..:cheers
