Try turning out almost all the lights but a tiny one in the garage before shooting. This will make it impossible for the long exposure to pickup light besides the flash. The flash is so fast it can't blur the pic.
As far as your camera goes, the shots look like a "motion blur" problem. Try squeezing the trigger gently. You could also hold it on top of a wood board with a rag on top. Or anything the right height. If you don't have or can't borrow a tri pod.
Don't go by a tripod, most are crap and most shots don't need one.
The auto exposure meter in the camera is holding the shutter open because the garage is a low light situation, and this extra garage light is bluring the photo.
