Two timer.

The highest price that I am aware of for an original GT40 that actually sold is $2.5M for 103, a very historic Shelby team car that won Daytona in 1965. This was sold at auction a few years go.

Gentlemen,

The original two time LeMans winning (1968 &1969) Gulf GT, #1075, sold several years ago for $15 million. It resides right here in Scottsdale, Arizona today in a private collection and is not on display or available for the public to see.

that has to be a world record sale for a car anywhere ever :eek

i know a Ferrari 250 testarossa sold for $13 million within a year after Enzo died. this was like in 1990 or so.

Small Block Cobra production started in 1962 - 1965 with roughly 675 cars being produced. 260 powered and with transverse mounted Leaf spring front suspension and a worm and sector steering system they then went to 289 power after about 75 cars I believe (SAAC Registry not handy, working off memory) and I think after 175 cars they went to a rack and pinion system. the 427-428 COBRA's were made from 1965-1967 with a total production run of 350 cars. many street COBRA's had 428 Police Interceptor engines in them as the cost of 427 Side Oilers were about triple that of a 428 P.I. engine.

thank you for that info :thumbsup that is very useful info to know. it really puts modern cars build #'s such as the 4,038 Ford GT's made into perspective from a standpoint of collectibility and value. i believe that there were 103 or so original Ford GT40's made in the 60's......

i think the viper is sort of the modern day version of the 60's cobra. it looks like production for the viper will end in 2011 with a total build of like 29,000 cars from 1992-2011.

I got to see 1075 a few months ago... and didn't have my camera!! :bored Oh well, theres always next time.

You would think that at least Ford people would understand the difference in the cars. I recently visited the parts department at my local Ford Dealer. I asked for some belly pan scrwes for the "Ford GT Supercar (you would think that would cover it)." The tech proceeded to pull up a parts diagram for a Mustang. I said "no no the mid-engine, $175,000 GT" ... oh you mean the GT40, he said. Oui!?!?!

i see that you used to own an original 1960's cobra. can you tell me how many cobras were made and how many of those were 427's? also if you can tell me what years cobra's were made in the 60's?

I still have my original 1966 427 SC Cobra, CSX3047. Bought it in 1986. Bought my first one in 1971--for $6000. :biggrin I recently sold my original GT40 that I owned for almost 30 years. More about that in another message.

This is the exact reason I wish Ford had called the car the GT43 or GT44 (depending on which way they wanted to round off the car's height). At least THEN no matter who a guy might be talking to they'd KNOW what car was being discussed from the get-go.

Here's an original 1966 GT40 MKI . Neighbor owned it for 13 years, completely restored it for $300K and 2 years of restoration, and won best of class at Pebble, I believe 2005 Class P (post war) best of show. Sold it for 1.5 million.

1966 GT40 MKI above was completely restored, painted dark blue, and won best of class 2005 Peeble Beach.

It was a bear to drive!

Both the sets of photos are of the same GT40 MKI. Red one before restoration and dark blue afterwards.

I guess for $350K you get what you pay for. I would have kept it red with white stripes???
