06 Ford Gt adventure home

In 05/06 when the FGT's were coming out I was only 37 years old. I had two young kids and needed a larger vehicle so I flew from Calgary, Alberta to Kelowna, BC to buy a Ford, Explore and drive it 6 hours home to accommodate our new, larger family.

I thought I was a high roller. Flying in to pick up my Ford Explorer. When I got to the dealership to get the Explorer there was a Ford GT sitting on the dealership floor.

I thought, F me. What a car! But I was here for the family and the Explorer. I joined the Ford GT forums shortly after.

Fast forward 13 years and the kids are almost gone and I bought a 06 FGT 5 months ago just short of my 50th birthday cause I was train wrecking about turning 50. It's been stored down in Nevada for 5 months and the day has come for me and the wife to be get her and bring her home.

We just borded our flight and are heading South to get the car for the 1,363 mile trip home.

I am stoked and a little scared!!! I'll update the forum during our trip home.

Thanks to everyone on the forums. You rock. 😎

Awesome story!!! How could you stand knowing it was so far away for so long? At least you'll get a few months of driving season! Stay off the freeways and on the mountain roads home, the car handles like a dream. But you've read over all the years how scooty the GT can be, especially on cold tires and pavement so be careful first thing in the morning driving in the mountains!

You beat my age by a few years when you bought your GT, good for you. Bought mine three months ago, drove it home 750 miles the next day. I took a few hours and did my own PrePurchase Inspection before I bought it AND drove it home. SUPER to drive, you will love it. I was surprised how very quite it is, no engine mechanical noise at all, except a little supercharger whine sometimes. It has the stock muffler. I bought a Heffner pipe from Cooltech to take care of that pesky noise vacancy. Many things will be happening to it this winter. Let us know how the luggage (handbag) situation works.

(y)Congratulations, what a great adventure! As twobjshelbys said here, be very careful with older tires. The car is so confidence inspiring but don't trust older tires since there are no nannies to save you if they lose grip. Welcome to the family.

We arrived yesterday evening and the wife and I had a few too many drinks and we thoroughly enjoyed the warm Nevada weather. Had a peak in the garage just to make sure my mistress was still there. All is good.

Today I headed down to the DMV to get a 15 Day Special Drive-Away permit so I could legally drive her up to the Canada/US border where I'll export the car from the US and import it into Canada. I arrived at the DMV this morning at 8:05 (5 minutes after it opened) and I'll be damned if there wasn't 500 people already inside. We were lined up 30 deep out the front door. I thought I was going to be there all day but fortunately it only took me about 40 minutes to get the permit so I was pretty happy.
This afternoon I changed the negative battery ground cable as the one the car had a striped nut and it wouldn't tighten up.
Everything else is good to go for the trip home. I can't wait.

Congratulations on your purchase! Here's wishing you many happy miles. The hard part for you will be putting it up for the winter. I grew up in Calgary and I guess you could pray for lots of Chinooks so you could drive it some before Spring.

Good job on the negative ground! I had to revamp mine about 4 years into original ownership - same, couldn't get the original ground to consistently ground. Haven't had a problem in the last 9 years!

Enjoy the journey! It just gets better and better and you are starting off solid!

We woke up early this morning and got ready to go. We packed up for the trip but our original bag wouldn't fit so we had to downsize to this bag. Wife still looks happy though.

Trip odometer set to zero.

We left Vegas at the crack of dawn. What a beautiful morning it was.

It was a perfect day, the I15 wasn't too busy and it was blue sky's all day.

Our first stop was at one of my favorite places. Beaver, Utah. I love beaver.

We followed that with a bunch of rest stops and refueling along the way.

A mere 12 1/2 hours later and 862.8 miles we're 65% of the way home and spending the night in Butte, Montana.

I'm actually really surprised how comfortable the seats are in this car. They are not as nice as the massage seats in my F150 but they are pretty damn good.

The car is tucked away in a garage for the night and the wife and I are eating pizza and chasing that back with a couple drinks.

Tomorrow, we head for the border!!

So glad you got your GT and are enjoying it with your wife. You probably have had at least 50 pictures of it taken today,

Drive it safely and in good health. Bet you haven't stopped smiling yet! Cheers
