What is the top speed of a Whippled GT

Say with 850 or so HP at the crank, what would the top speed of a Whippled car be? I'm asking because it is kinda wet of tonight and I'm a bit lazy (read as chicken) to go find out. Is there any formula to calculate it? How much will it take to hit the 6th gear redline speed of 250???

Fast enough to make you want to stop ;).

Take a look at these spreadsheets. It plots HP vs. HP and speed vs rpm for gears. Two assumptions are made. One that the stock GT at Nardo was geared optimally for top speed run of 212 mph. The second is that whatever HP your car has it is also gear optimally so that top speed is reached at the RPM where the peak HP is made.

Note I couldn't upload excel.xls files so you have to rename them from .txt to .xls.

top speed

Unless the your tuner removed the speed clip it won't go any faster than 205mph.

Also (after removing the speed limit chip,... thanks Rich) you might want to just keep the car in 5th gear as Mark McGowan did at Nardo. This produced the highest terminal speed with the stock engine as I believe 6th may be an overdriven ratio (ok correct me if I am wrong). Really depends on the power vs rpm characteristics of the Wippled engine vs the drag characteristics of the vehicle vs track speed (which incidently increases by speed^2).

So at the high speeds (+200 mph) it takes gobs more power to go incrementally faster. Thus I would anticipate that a Wippled car would accelerate faster to terminal speed (thru the lower speed region) and would be faster at top end but not what you might think given the significant amount of power over and above the stock engine's capability.

You won't be able to redline 6th gear with that amount of power. I think a Whipple car with about 750rwhp should be able to do ~225-230mph in 5th with the redline raised to 7000, which is all I'd subject it to. I can't recall what the spreadsheet said the speed vs. rpm was at 7k, but it's somewhere in the 220s, but ballooning of the tires (hoosier) takes it a bit higher. I think on Goodyears it would be in that 225-230 range. I think 6th is probably just a bit to tall too pull 6th, and you run out of rpm in 5th.

Not that I know :wink but a car with more power than that has been verified at 232 mph and only stopped for lack of runway, so aero is no problem. I think the current twin turbo GT's would certainly pull 6th gear to over 260 mph given the space to do so. Tom Reichenbach always said the GT had the aero to do so without a problem, and given the ease with which a sub-1000rwhp clobbered 230mph, I don't foresee these cars with an addition 300-400rwhp maxing out the rpm in 6th.

At that point the concern is how long can the tires make it and the loads on the trans/engine.

cd is also a major factor. I think in real world 225-230 is quite optimistic.

Nope. I've seen it done with my own eyes with the best verification equipment you can buy :biggrin

This is simply torturous. When will we hear? How much should I be saving?

I don't remember buying any equipment. I even checked with the wife who said absolutely not.

It should definitely be over 216mph even for just a pullied car ;)
