Following the announcement from the ACO this morning, it was announced that Matech Competition and our Ford GT1 car has been invited to race this most important of races, on June 12-13 this year.

To say we are ecstatic is an understatement !!
Here is a copy of the press release that will appear on our website shortly. You can read it again on the website, in your preferred language, plus see a pretty gorgeous photo of the car...more will follow after testing finishes later on at Portimao.

Matech to compete with Ford GT1 at Le Mans 24 hours.

Martin Bartek and the entire Matech Competition team are thrilled following confirmation from the ACO of their invitation to take a Ford GT1 car to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. “This is great recognition for the whole team who have worked very hard on this Ford GT1 project. That our car has been considered for this 78th edition exceeds our wildest dreams. The 24 Hours of Le Mans are as much a legend as Ford’s adventure at Le Mans. Now we need to prove that both the team and the car are ready for the unique challenge that is Le Mans. We are equally pleased that our customer team, MarcVDS Racing, has also received an invitation to the race, and we look forward to providing them with our support as we do in the GT1 World Championship.

Steve

Ralphie,

A # of FGT Forum members will be making the trek to France to watch the Ford GT's return to Lemans. We'll start making plans ASAP and will discuss it with everyone in Nevada next weekend.

Great news and congrats!! I'm going this year for sure.

Does it mean this is the first time since the 60s that a Ford is competing at Le Mans?

Fords at LM after 1969.

Ed

Ed,

No. Several Fords raced in the 1970's. They were highly modified Ford Capris and they scored a number of top 10 finishes. The all conquering Porsche 917 thoroughly outclassed the Ford GT in 1970, rendering it obsolete. Although a number of Fords have raced at Le Mans since 1969, they have raced in a lower category with no hope for an outright win. I don't know that much about LeMan's history, so I'll pose a question here to our knowledgeable membership.

I assume that the prototype cars are considerably faster than the GT1 cars. Has a GT1 car ever won LeMans outright? Is it even possible?

In any event, it'll be a hell of a trip.

Here's the entry list - way to go Matech! May even get two cars in? I see one as a Reserve entry.

And with many of the factory teams in GT2, I think you have a real shot at this!

(Not to steal Matech's thunder, but there is a second team with a GT entered in GT! class.)

I'm booking flights and hotels online now!!!!
