Is anyone interested in getting new vents fabricated for the rear of the car? I am looking into this but because of the complexity of the design it may be pricey to make them in a high temp Carbon Fiber or Aluminum (which can be anodized in a verity of colors).

I have heard that many are working on this but no one seems to be bringing it to the table. How many people here would be players on this?

I'm in. How about flat black or grey anodized like the color on mag wheels. How much do you think it will cost? Spirit is there a plastic that can take high heat? It's time for you to save our butts.

I'm also thinking about wrapping my accufab x-pipe to contain or deflect the heat. Has anyone tried this?

hang tight ... I have three sets in prototype.

Sides and over engine milled out of aluminum. should have them back right after SEMA to see how they fit. then its how to color them ... plate, powdercoat or other wise.

being done at a av-fab shop in wichita ...

The vents are the "blk" soft plastic one that mount vertically - not the flat colored ones if you have a stripe - correct?

Also thought John at Accufab was working this replacement part.....

BTW - I'm in for a set of non - warpable vents!

Both side AND top vents warp and need to be replaced.

I have also been working on having all four vents made from cast aluminum. Goal is for all four powder coated black (or maybe anodized - not final there yet) and in the $600-$700 range for the set.

I have an initial quote for development of the mold, etc. Was just looking for an additional bid before following up and posting on the board. I have spent considerable time on the project as it sounds like some others have.

I have looked at a variey of styles and several different types of metals, ways to produce them, as well as the possibility of making them from other materials. Have gotten to that end by eliminating the other materials as well methods of making (such as CNC for a number of reasons).

Maybe those that are doing something need to be talking so we are not duplicating, etc. The set up cost is enough that I don't think any of us want to waste money (especially me :biggrin )

Who else is working on something?

I also have a replacement set waiting at my dealer. They told me that they were going to ask Ford about this to see if they are going to do a fix. It might be a longshot, but parts warping on this kind of car shouldnt happen.

I've wrapped my X pipe. It really cuts down on the heat disapated in the area of the vents.. I used the 2" wide cloth exhaust wrap sold at most auto stores.

I'm told if you apply some two sided emblem tape to the top edge of the vent( back side ) it will hold it in place.

Spirit is there a plastic that can take high heat?

There is (has a higer "softening point"), but by the time you set up to make it (molds, etc) it doesn't appear any cheaper than doing them out of aluminum and then you still have the issue of having a plastic part. May be OK, but might just be better to step away from the plastic altogether since this is rather from scratch.

I figured if Spirit could make a fake female torso for Dr. Frank he could do anything.

Are you lining the warping vent with something?

I have a cousin that is doing a few prototypes on a cnc machine at his custom av fab shop. Not really sure what the cost would be in production. He just likes the car and wanted to make something for it. Since he builds parts for the X-craft in the same shop ... I figure he knows what he's doing :lol

Some years ago I had a Jaguar XKR - I had 3 of them over a couple of years.

One of them had a problem with the louvered grilles- they obviously moved around a little when driving and it damaged the paintwork. The paintwork just as it curved into the recess to accept the grilles.

Despite many refits of these grilles, Jaguar could never sort this particular car out. My other two XKR's did not have this problem.

So I'm wondering what the weight of the Ford (plastic) part is and what the weight of an aluminium part is. Would this (potentially heavier) part be subject to movement on our moderately stiff cars? Would this jiggling about damage paintwork in hard to reach areas?

Just a thought as you're in design mode!

Could be interesting

Seemed the biggest draw back when we discussed a CNC type of item was that the surfaces would probably not be a good as we would like - chances for ridges etc, similar to what is on the CNC a-arms.

I would imagine that a higher level of finishing could then take place, but as soon as anyone touches them, the price goes up too much.

That has been brought up as well as expansion from heat, etc. A gasket could be apprpriate, but each thing adds new potential problems.

I think we'll find out how stuff is once it is tried. So many things look good, but until the real world comes into play, you don't really know what will happen. Real world is what is happening now to the vents.

We know that the plastic vents are not a good option for some or many (some guys still don't seem to have any warpage - don't know the common element yet), and don't know if the aluminum will be better in the long run, but doesn't seem that they can be worse than the plastic.

We should still probably do a thread about warping info - i.e, warped or not, and year, exhaust, location, miles, transaxle cooler, pulley / tune / other, etc. See if there is anything that jumps out.

I am still wondering if the transaxle cooler isn't restricting the air flow too much.

Don't know, but what the heck, I'll start that thread since the Forum has the data base of guys to help solve the problem.

the test piece that he showed me was smooth as a baby's butt. maybe he does a finish step that the did not do on the control arms. Also from what I was told the process is similar to what they do making custom billet wheels. Maybe I should ask more questions?

The vents stay as is plus the tape on the top edge. The X pipe got wrapped with insulation..

I was thinking that same thing. Metal v/s Plastic... I could certainly see an aluminum piece causing some damage. Although I was surprised that the OEM plastic piece did very little damage after it was removed. You could easily coat the underside with felt or thick cloth but when that gets hit with heat and water it would likely fall apart. A rubber or paper gasket would be a better candidate.

If someone can fabricate the piece in aluminum I would be glad to take on the risk and responsibility or dealing with finish, color and any gasket issue.

Heat protection with stock muffler

Dennis aka GToy has the answer for stock muffler. This cover on my Heritage muffler seems to hold the heat so when you touch the clamshell all is cool....5 min. install.....

I am open to hear what Fubar and AZGT has been working on. Would prefer CF vents.
