The time fast approaches for the next “big time” track event at Virginia International Raceway put on by the SVT Cobra Mustang Club (SCMC). There will definitely be 3 FGT’s attending as I look at who is already signed on, and this is the full 3.7 mile course with the amazingly long back straightaway and the roller coaster downhill run onto the tricky front straight with the kink around the tree. Can’t forget the high speed and mildly banked S turns or the Oak tree turn. It should not be missed by anyone interested in testing the waters; and not to worry, it is not a race and the instructors will have you doing the right thing in no time.

The event activities can be found here: http://www.svtcobraclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16587

The sign up list can be accessed here: http://www.scmcstore.com/store/product.php?productid=96&cat=2&page=1

Hope to see some of you out there.

What sort of lap times does this group turn? I may consider it, although last time I had the GT on track I had to replace a windshield!

I haven't got a clue what the times are. I know that Mike (xraycook) chewed up the group in the intermediate group last time we were there together, and when he slightly backed off so I could tailgate for about 7 laps, I learned quite a bit. He and Jim S., who is already signed up, have extensive track experiance compared to me, the slower guy. Woodard, another FGT driver is typically out there flying in his FR-500, and there are several blistering Corvettes that always are fun to watch with some great drivers/instructors.
I did end up with a safe-lite resin u/v fix on a small chip the last time I was up in New Jersey; but the same could and does happen driving on the road. It makes no difference what you bring to the track, there is always a nice mix of cars and drivers, and I know right where I will be; cowering behind the wheel coasting up the hill on the back straight where I should eclpise 160 but not knowing what's on the other side of the hill will be more like 130 on the brakes. Come on out, it'll be fun.

And this time I will have the spare power steering hose that Jim and I lost the last time we were the; and Mike has one in his trailer as well.

Would love to come out...unfortunately, this is the weekend of our Ford GT Rally. I will be back by Oct 16 but my car will not (probably a few days later). Been to VIR several times with the Audi Club and NC chapter of the Ferrari Club....love it. Great course for the GT. Will definitely consider it for future events.

The Ferrari bunch in this area used to have an couple of events in West VA, then the dealership was sold and the new owners seem to have no interest in track events. Have great fun in Texas and I will continue bringing up these east coast track days when I find them.

Jamie,

you, my friend, can bring anything you want. It is mostly Mustangs and Corvettes with this group; but there are always a good variety of cars, and why wouldn't you want to bring the FGT? If it is wanting to be faster around the track, not to worry, there is always something running better times. I have become an expert at poing bye's. Though Mike and Jim would be tough to catch in the Viper unless modded with a seasoned driver. Join us for some food and fun; Mike is also an expert at grilling and food preparation.

Plenty of room as the track is about 3.7 miles long with too many corners to memorize.

I’m ready to go Pete. Looking forward to trying out the new Brembo front rotors and pads that the Shadowman hooked me up with and the Penske Shocks from T/A Alex... See you there.

I'll work on my camera a bit and try and get behind you for a couple of flame-throwing laps. Or put Rick in the car to follow you as I doubt I belong in that group you are running with. See you there.

Pete, how was the track?

Mike,

the weather turned out better than the long range forecast had predicted. But it was still right on the edge, for me, being too cold; more power and less grip, and I watched the others and slowly improved my times; I hope. Great turnout, 6 owners, but only 3 FGT's. Looked like around 100 participants amoung 4 run groups. Here is a lap I ran yesterday; still quite a bit of room for improvement, looks like 160's on the back straight and around 140 on the front, but only light tire squeal in a couple of places, and way too conservative in the uphill "esses" as well as the downhill rollercoaster-off camber sweeping onto the front. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5BX7YgcEnE .

Are you going to make it out there next year?

As I said in 1957 when I won the race here, I think this is the most interesting and fun race track that's been built in this country. I still feel that way...

- Carroll Shelby

I am telling you guys...you have no idea how fun this track actually is...so much more complicated than most any other track in the country...perfect for high hp cars. It never gets boring. Great accommodations and a fantastic evening restaurant are within the track property. We could easily host our GT group from Austin here.

Here is fast. This is driving VIR, starts with end of front straight, then onto a short straight under a bridge, up the famous uphill esses, around Oak tree and then the long back straight, before dropping down roller coaster onto the front straight again. You can follow him on the map.
