Smelling fuel.

For the last few years I had had trouble pumping fuel into the 05 GT. You have to go very very slow and takes forever to fuel up. Now lately I have a strong fuel odor inside the car. Could this be the charcoal canister? I have used a camera to inspect the fuel neck down into the tank and it’s clear. Anyone have a pic of the inside the tank where the fuel first enters to compare to what I can see? Need some help.

Maybe these will help. Fuel filler behind right front tire. Evap canister in front of tire. Two more pics to follow.

Samson, there are 3 flaps in the throat of the filler neck as this was the firs car to go CAPLESS.
Even mine was replaced back in the day IF you pushed the nozzle too deep it would break the flap spring and stay down or open pumping back the fumes and not seal.
BUT you should be getting an evap check engine light.
If not and theres no code, were you using a gas nozzle with he RUBBER boot or vapor catcher. Sometimes if you were it makes a vacuum trap and it wont click.
Or another words put the nozzle half in the filler neck. Also if you OVERFILL it will stink because the vent screen is right thereunder the windscreen.
Good Luck back in the day the gtguys replaced ALOT of them.

Thanks guys, no codes or running issues, the smell is worse when the car is stop and go or curves. Straight road is not noticeable much.

I will try to get some pictures from the scope today and post them of the filler neck and just inside the tank. Was able to scope all the way up and down the filler neck with no obstructions but that dont mean fuel can flow/vent proper. Maybe we can see if the spring is gone. I have use a fuel can to fill before with the long rubber hose at the track.

MAD NC I think was an early issue car like mine......you woul stall and the code would pop up. Maybe your vent tube popped off, have you had the inner liner out for some reason?
The tank is a ship in a bottle between the seats , but your smelling the fumes up front correct.

ARE YOU SURE ITS NOT YOUR FUEL RAIL LINE HOSE IN THE BACK? THIS IS A PRESS ON HOSE THAT WE ALL PUT A CLAMP ON YEARS AGO.
CHECK THAT OUT …..

Found part of my problem, last year I was replacing front headlight and didn’t fully press the vent tube back on. So that solved my fuel smell problem. But the slow fueling still there as it was there 2 years before the smell issue

When my filler flap broke it did the usual stalling thing but I never got a code.

So when you are pushing fuel into the tank it needs to be able to vent back through the vent tube that returns back up the filler neck. When you state that you did not properly install the tube back on correctly this is something to look at. I have had spiders nest in a vent tube and cause enough restriction that I could not fuel without it kicking off and not taking fuel. If you can get to the tube and blow air pressure back in both directions clearing the vent and you fueling issue should be fixed. Please note when blowing back towards the tank to have the funnel installed in the filler neck so the pressure can escape the tank. Hope this helps. If you think it through it makes since and I have experienced this before.
