Recommend an OBD II scanner?

I have an Ancel AD310 OBD-II scanner, and my check engine light is on but the scanner shows no codes either Stored or Pending so I want to try another scanner. Can anyone recommend another one that might see the code(s)?

I was going to try to borrow one but think I'll just buy one rather than messing with trying to borrow.

Thank you ...

I use this Bluetooth scanner and the Torque Android app. I think this version is also iOS compatible.

If you're just looking for confirmation of the one you have take the car to Auto Zone or O'Reilleys. Bring yours along...

Is this the Check Gage light? Look on page 11 of your owners manual.

I bought an Innova handheld model about 4 years ago. I opted up for the more deluxe model (about $200) because I use it across a handful of cars including my wife's 2020 Lincoln and my 2021 F150 3.0 Diesel, my brother's Dodge van and his Subaru. The models have changed, but this one at NAPA is close to what I got. I will say that my experience with it so far has been very good. It is able to read all the codes I have encountered, plus the transmission, ABS brake system, HVAC controls, and some other stuff.

I prefer the separate dedicated tool, rather than an app that runs on a phone with some Bluetooth dongle.

Autel and Launch are two full shop capability scan tools. Autel uses an Android tablet. I have the Autel which is now a few years old. It provides the ability to test run most everything, fuel pump(s), intercooler pump, etc. Also, can place systems in maintenance mode, brake bleed/flush, emergency brake, etc. And on, and on.

Looking at pg 10 of the manual it is the "Service engine soon" ... the yellow one with the profile of an engine. Its stays lit solid, not blinking.

Rich Brooks installed it before this year's Woodward Dream Cruise August 15-17. It's an Optima red top, but I can't see a date on it and unless you think I should I don't want to take it apart / take it out yet if that's going to clear the code(s) before I can see what they are. The battery was not on a tender Aug 15-20 while I was in Detroit and then North Carolina, then I put it back on tender the night of Aug 20. I've tested the battery twice over the past few days, with it disconnected from its tender: 1) My multimeter reads it at 12.75 volts, and 2) My Foxwell BT705 battery tester reads it at 12.83 volts, and with the tester set to set to 1000 CA a battery test results in "Good Battery".

Can you tell me where the battery date should be, and if I should be able to see it without removing it?

I ordered an Innova 3100RS today; should be here tomorrow; thanks AMZN! I'm glad to hear it reads your Lincoln and F150, just in case my Ancel just doesn't like Fords for some silly reason.

Thanks for all the replies ... Hoping I can resolve this thing. I'm scheduled for Cars on 5th Naples in February and not sure it would be a good idea to drive it if the CEL isn't resolved yet ... Knowing the car seems to be starting, idling and running correctly. Would you drive it before the CEL issue is resolved?

Appreciate the help ...

I'm hesitant to try one that requires a phone connection since I'm already having issues reading the code(s) with a scanner that doesn't even bring another device connection into the mix. Any other time, a small OBD device that pops in and can be read right on your phone, heck yeah that sounds nice and convenient.

Thanks ...

Might try one of those if the Innova that's arriving tomorrow doesn't find any codes. Thanks!

Well, you have the wrong battery installed in the car to begin with. What's shown is a 34/78 and the spec is for a Group 25. Dimensionally they are the same but the 34/78 has an additional set of side terminals. Absolutely no benefit in a GT but there is additional risk because of the battery tray in the GT. While there's typically plastic inserts in these additional terminals, they can vibrate free.

As far as the voltages and your test results, it would seem that the battery is good. The only time we have seen a GT give an errant CEL is when there was a battery anomaly. Just check those additional side terminals and make sure they can't contact anything and that the battery is secured down really well. For $200-ish, I'd go ahead and install the correct battery.

Once again. The light DOES or DOES NOT come on with the engine running? Choose 1.

As stated it is normal for it TO BE LIT when the engine is not running.

Why not just bring it to Auto Zone?

Only time I had a check engine light come on in almost 55000 miles was when the fuel filler flap broke, car was running fine.

I choose A. The light DOES come on with the engine running ... and stays on. I'm staring at a yellow "Service engine soon" light the entire time driving and just idling in my garage.

Why not just bring it to Auto Zone?
I just prefer to deal with it here in my garage.

OK, thanks ... Since the new Innova scanner is arriving today, I'll try to read codes and if it doesn't find any I'll replace the battery. Thank you.

Same here: My fuel filler flap broke earlier this year, which of course triggered the CEL and it stayed on full time until Rich replaced the filler neck in July. Once I picked the car up from him in Detroit there was no CEL for the 3 days driving around Detroit during Woodward, nor the additional 1-day drive two days later on the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC. But the first time I drove the car a couple weeks after being back home in FL the CEL came on about 8 miles into my drive, and it stayed on the rest of that drive and has been on ever since, albeit only here in my garage as I haven't driven it since the CEL came on.

If the CEL is not flashing, I would keep driving it until I got it fixed. Let’s see what the error codes are.

Humor me... use one of your current obdii readers to check the status of the emissions self tests. Do this with the engine running
