Want to purchase a ODBII scan tool. Can you all please make your recommendations on a tool that is robust in it's diagnostic capabilities? Thanks. DJ

Robust IMO is an interesting choice of words as such I own and use OEM Factory diagnostic equipment for each marquee that I tend to; in the case of the Ford GT I use a Factory VCM/IDS

Now having stated this I also have general use scan tools however they always lack something unique to a specific marquee.

Takes care

Daniel, how do you want to use the tool? Just for the GT? For other makes/models?

IMHO the VCM/IDS tool is way, way overkill for 99% of the people. Consider that we have probably worked on more than 100 GT's and we have never missed or longed for the VCM/IDS tool because much simplier, less expensive, multi-usage tools are readily available and work great. I would point you at the tools from OTC and you can even source these from your local Sears. Also, you may consider an SCT device which has the ability to read codes and reset the ECU and with the added advantage of having the ability to host and load a tune if that may be in your future. Many many choices out there and much depends on your intended utilization.

Want to be able to use on my Ferrari too. '99 355 F1 car. CE light came on this weekend and I want to check out the codes for myself. Would also want to use on the GT in the event that I get some code event and it would be nice to reset the cooling fans to start at lower temperatures. The SCT device sounds like it might be a good choice assuming it can work with multiple marques. Can you recommend a vendor for this or does one of the Forum sponsors offer this tool? As always, the responses are appreciated. DJ

Don't have iPod or iPhone but do have a laptop with Windows 7. Anyone using the Palmer Performance software? Thanks again. DJ
