Well, I can now finally say I got to do a runway event!! It was a lot of fun, and got better as the day went along. The weather was a bit of a negative, not too cold, but overcast with only a couple of very brief rain delays fortunately.

So here is a blow by blow of the positives and a couple of minor complaints. The MKM staff was very professional and very safety conscious. I thought some of the requirements were a little much. While I understand the safety reasons for arm restraints I did not like using them at all. And while I understand wanting to “familiarize” people with the track I did not like having to burn a run at 140-150 to get “upgraded” to run full out, particularly when weather is an issue and driving our cars at those speeds in a straight line is not exactly rocket science. I glanced over at the speedo on that run I had to burn and I was at 165 :eek and climbing heading towards the ¾ mile mark and I had to back off at the finish to make sure I didn’t go over 150 and get sent to the principal’s office. :bored

The runway was beautiful, very long and wide with perfect pavement. :thumbsup Ideal for the event. No heavy braking was required as we went to the end of the runway before turning around to come back and get our time slips. I accomplished my goals of improving on each of my “real” runs posting a 173.3, 175.4 and my final run of 181.9. Each run I felt I learned more about the car in this type of venue, got better at the launch and got very comfortable shifting right at the rev limiter. On my last run I decided that shifting to fifth just before the end of the run was costing me and I was going to leave it in 4th till I hit/if I hit the rev limiter. It came ever so close but I did not blip the rev limiter and posted my best time of the day. :banana Good job Mr. Heffner for making my car go 181.9 in fourth gear. :lol I think I could have coaxed a couple more mph’s out of it with a couple more runs, but my day was at its end.

The amazingly fun thing about our GT’s, for me anyway, is I am not worrying about the car in any way shape or form at high speeds. It is just so darn stable. I am just analyzing my performance and figuring out how to do better. I wish I could have gone again today because I really feel I have the knowledge to get the best out of my set-up. That said I need more horsepower!!!:bang:bang:bang

Now, the best part of the event was, as always the other GT owners. It is great to be around a group that is so supportive of one another and is cheering each other on like they are a member of your family. Each of us checked on each others runs, congratulated each other, talked about what was working for each of us sharing our experiences so we could all improve. What a great group of people, but you all already know that. :cheers

A special thanks to all of the GT owners for making my experience that much better. A big shout out to GTED (got to know how that last run went pal), tallcarguy, (who made me feel comfortable going for the rev limiter), Apollo (and wife), LOVE CHP (and wife), Fast Freddy (love the hand held atmosphere device), Joe whose last name escapes me and last, but surely not least the fastest GT at the Mojave Mile, Black Ice. It was great watching you analyze your runs and tune your car on the fly like the mad scientist of speed. (and immense thanks for the loan of the arm restraints) It was great to meet Chris A in person (altough I really want to see your GT doors in person as well :lol ) and Piccola always dresses up any GT event.

So in closing it was a fun event. Would I do it again? I would love to, however I would prefer a smaller group of cars, even if I had to pay extra. There was nowhere near the field limit of 150. (don’t know a full count but I would say no more than 90 cars, some only making a couple of passes) I got in 4 runs and people were clearing out by the end and the grid was lighter, but I had to leave for work. Maybe if I stayed for the last 2 hours I could have got 6 runs, but the rain looked like it was on the way back strong. But if the number of cars there limited me to 4 runs by 3 in the afternoon I can’t imagine what a full grid would have been like. You guys who had the GT only day at the Texas Mile must have had a blast. Sorry I missed that one. My ADD makes me impatient. I just want to drive...........okay who am I kidding, if there is a chance to drive my GT I am going to show if possible. I just hope these events start to happen more often out here, that I can get more runs……and that I figure out what direction I am going to go to make my car faster. :driving:

Enjoy the pics and I hope the other GT participants post their experiences.

great post skyrex :thumbsup the Mojave Mile was sweet!!! i look forward to going back in the future with a 4.0 whipple, borla headers and some nitrous and trying for 200 mph :cheers

i have done 4 different 1 mile top speed shootouts in America now. i have done the "HIGH noon" shootout twice at the Silver State Classic. the Texas Mile once. the "HIGH Roller" mile shootout once and the Mojave Mile once. by far the best location, track and event is the "Mojave Mile"

the track photographer got lots of pix and videos of my runs. i will post them up next month when i get them......

sounds like you had a great time. reading your post and seeing the pics gets my blood moving because I know the Texas Mile is coming in a few weeks. :)

One little tidbit for anyone with a GT in these events........

Skyrx is right, you will get your best speed if you run the rpm's all the way to the redline which means you shift about 100 rpm before the point where the engine cuts fuel.

Hi All! Sorry to be a bit behind on the posts, we are on the road to for work with the GT in tow for a little play!:thumbsup
First I got to brag a bit. Mrs. Apollo did 176.4. :banana:banana:eek:eek
I was more excited and nervous on her runs than any of mine.
Second, it was so good to see all the wonderful GT people as Skyrex has mentioned. Good times!
The wind was real factor all day, both positive and negative. It never let up and was pushing the wind sock straight out all day. I would say no less than 20 mph avg. There were several safety delays from shifting wind to those darn corvettes dropping oil all over the place.:ack ( I used to own one of those, please don't hold it against me:biggrin) and a little bit of the wet stuff.
It was a strong right front headwind in the morning and shifted to almost a tail wind for about a hour when several of the guys got much better runs in including the red Camaro that was the only car able to break 200. I think 200.7 was the time. He was an unlimited car with supposedly around 1200hp on tap. Chip or one of the other TT GT cars would have handed him his butt...:wink
In any case, you guys should have been there!:cheers
The wind shifted to a left front for the remainder of the day and it killed the rest of the times including that darn Camaro.
I can tell you it was very hard to hook up for me all day. I could not keep the tires from spinning in the first three gears. As we all know, temps below 60 and stock Goodyears do not equal good results. I think even Skyrex was full sideways for a good part of a run... I agree the RPMs between shifts was very important as the car seemed to be hitting a brick wall :bangif there was any delay between shifts or if the RPMs were not right. I think the wind and altitude made the runs more difficult that the Texas mile.
That all been said, great time! Mike Border, Mary and the crew did a great Job! :thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup
Now my time to brag... 189.4 on my last run, just edging out Black Ice for the best Ford GT time of the day.. and I think is the second best car time of the day! :banana:banana
Next up, the Tejas mile...:party

Terry,

I live my life in Arizona vicariously through my son Charley. His baseball, football, wrestling, and hunting exploits bring me more joy than anything I have ever done myself. When it comes to Ford GT driving events, I have participated in many. But the two most exciting driving events I have experienced, did not have me behind the wheel. Number one was Soroush's single run at the Texas Mile last October. :lol I still chuckle when I think about his "one hand on the wheel, one hand on the button", "Spirit of America", "one shot and ban my ass" 217 MPH mile! :eek :thumbsup When I close my eyes and think about it, I can still hear and see his wicked fast black Ford GT rocketing down that runway.

#2 is definitely your sweetheart Monica's 176 MPH Mohave mile run. The fastest time I am aware of, for a woman Ford GT driver at a mile event. At the Texas mile last October, when my car still had it's stock supercharger, my fastest run was 175 mph. Please tell Monica that I have never achieved the speed that she did at the mile. My best effort was not the equal of Monica's. Way to go Darlin'! I have modified my car slightly since the Texas Mile. Perhaps I'll equal your effort later this month in Texas. Veronica and I look forward to buying you both a cocktail at that event. :cheers

All the best.

Way to go Monica! Great to see you out on the track.

btw Anya's daughter, Kim, was something like 182 at Goliad in their Silver whippled GT.

You two are a couple are truly "Fast Women".

That is what I get for having to leave early, not having the full picture and writing up faulty info. I am going to give myself a :slap :lol

Congrats on the big run of the day Apollo!! :thumbsup:thumbsup Now you won't want me at future events because I am bad luck. :frown :wink

It was a fun day and I can't wait to do it again. Wish I could make Texas!! Hope you all have a great day and great weather at the Texas Mile!! :cheers

Monica was my hero for the weekend! Not only did she post kick a$$ times on the mile and look great in her red firesuit, but she opened up her and Terry's warm RV to us and offered hot chocolate to drink. On a cold, windy, wet day, it was heavenly! :thumbsup Will be interesting to see how times compare at the TX Mile, but I'm betting you (Monica) will break 180! :biggrin :banana It was nice to meet a few people I've only seen on the forum (GTEd and Richard Hille), to talk with Sue (Richard's wife, who I last saw in Fresno with Mrs. Bonyhadi), and to see some of the "regulars", who drove quite a way to get to the mile despite the poor weather forecast! Let's see, Skyrex, Terry and Monica, Fast Freddy, Chris A, Richard and Sue, Black Ice, and I'm sure there are a few I'm forgetting... Ice, thank you as well for letting me wear your big warm coat!!! I don't think I would have survived out there otherwise! :lol

Here are a few pictures I took. We were very far away from the runway, so the few pictures I took of the runs didn't turn out well, but I thought I'd still post them. They are of Terry and Skyrex.
