Mayday, Fule filler door, Help!!

Pulled the car out to clean it up for the Hot Rod Magazine "Power Tour" taking place this weekend right here in my back yard so to speek , went to fill her up with Avation 100 and low and behold the flapper inside the fill hole isn't even there any more??????

So i guess it was my turn, My questions are
#1 where did it go?
#2 can it travel all the way into the tank and be lost for ever?
#3 untill i get a new one can i just simply plug the hole with a tightly fitting rubber plug to get me By? :frown

Sounds very odd. Are you absolutely certain it's not stuck open somehow?

Fairly common issue. This is usually what happens after it quits sealing and gives the check engine light. To answer your questions.
#1 It is stuck in the filler neck and will more than likely cause an extremly slow fill at the next time you put gas in and it will cause a check engine light for an EVAP (Evaporative Emissions) code.
#2 No it won't make it to the tank and the neck narrows as it goes towards the tank.
#3 That would probably work for an emergency situation but just make sure that the sliding part of the neck still covers the hole.

New filler neck and problem solved.

Darn, Rich,
I was going to blame the disappearing flap on that "high octane" avgas.

(which incidently if using 100LL has TEL blended in the fuel and will foul the catalic converter. And the 100 octane billed as 100LL is not the same measurement of (R+M0)/2 usually understood by most.)

Up Date; I did find it, it's just sitting there, spring and all but there is no way to get it out the top due to it being larger than the opening.
Dam it any way, I have read several post's about this issue in the past so from the moment i bought the car i have always been very carefull of it and it still broke.

Tori, im ready to get one im just waiting to here from Bill because i seam to remember through the grape vine that there may be an upgraded fix for this.

Or i could have just been dreaming and it is what it is?

The "upgraded fix" of which you speak consists of swaping an F-150's (250's?) fuel filler assbly for the GT's origional. There's a thread around here somewhere outlining the whole operation - WITH photos!

OT, but I was surprised that Ford deployed this capless system to other cars and trucks. It is so fragile it must be causing huge warranty issues on vehicles that are not treated with kid gloves like most of us treat the fuel filler on the GT.

I hope the f150 mechanism is more robust than the GT set up.

The new filler neck was installed as such the present problem was solved and the gal is back on the road.

Having shared this the decission has been made; I/we will create a new filler assembly that will use a traditional screw in style cap thus insuring no future issues.

Jason’s approach was discussed/considered however the direction at this time is to end up with a convention spin on style fuel cap under the OEM access door that will not only eliminate future issues as associated with present design and also allow for easier filling when folks are using jug fuels during special events.

FYI Shadowman-

my 2010 Fusion has diffrent cap-less fuel filler than the GT. Metal flap rather than a plastic one. And it came with a "cap-less" fuel funnel for those times you're not using a std gas station nozzle. So I bought one for the GT, as a just in-case I should need it situation-$7.95.

And because the Fusion fuel filler door is strangely not lockable, I purchased a thread in locking cap for the Fusion capless system. Something around $20.
