HERE COME THE GIRLS
Tuesday, 08 June 2010 08:07
Taking up their spot on the Le Mans grid for 2010 is the all female driver line up in the Matech Racing Ford GT.
The Swiss trio of Cyndie Allemann, Natacha Gachnang and Rachel Frey are marking out their pages in the history book as there has not been a Ford at Le Mans since 1983 and the last time an all female team competed was in 1991.
Twenty two year-old Natacha is the youngest of the racing team and is the cousin of Formula one driver Sebastien Buemi from the Toro Ross team and says ‘Le Mans will be a fantastic experience for all three of us.’
Rachel is twenty four and began her racing career in karting in 1998, she has competed in Formula Renault, International Formula Master and last year picked up a win, a pole position and three podiums in the ATS F3 Cup.
Cyndie is well known for driving in the Indy Light single seaters and is looking forward to the race. ‘I was fortunate enough to experience Indianapolis 500 and that was breathtaking but apparently Le Mans is even better.’
Matech Racing team owner Martin Bartek explains his dream come true. ‘The Le Mans 24 hours is legendary. My goal was to get an all female team at Le Mans and these three know each other very well as they’ve grown up together in motor-racing.’
Vanina Ickx will be gearing up for her sixth Le Mans. This year has already been busy with Vanina competing in the Le Mans Series 8 Hours du Castellet, 1000km Spa and the 24 Hours of Nurburgring.
Vanina explains why Le Mans is so special. ‘It’s the most famous endurance race. It’s difficult for a team to be granted entry and it attracts the most beautiful cars. It’s an event that lasts an entire week where you catch up with friends, other teams, drivers and fans. Then there’s the briefing which reminds me of school. After the practice and qualifying sessions is the driver’s parade, which is so unique to Le Mans with an incredible crowd. In short, you live an eventful and tiring week, with the pressure rising and rising. Then the stands fill up with fans and it’s time for the start. You feel ultra privileged to be there!’ Melissa Warren Girlracer Magazine
