The car is in having old 3M film removed and new expel applied. They called to say that when starting the car to move it the check engine light came on, it is showing code P1101 MAF sensor out of read codes range. Any thoughts on what to check for when I go over there? TIA!

Hello Derry, I have seen leafs dead spiders and even mouse droppings in the mass air flow sensor. Two screws will remove the sensor from the air box and just look inside sensor to see if any restrictions are present. If so remove the debris and reinstall, clear codes and road test and self test to make sure code is no longer present.

Hope this helps.

Joe

I think they make a MAF cleaner in an aerosol can you just spray on after you take the part out. Auto Zone carrys it.

Yeah, good advice already given... Try cleaning it first. To remove the connector, slide the red safety back (toward the wires) and then squeeze the connector to release it from the MAF sensor. Inspect these wires to make sure no signs of rodent chewing. If OK, try cleaning and re-installing the sensor. If error persists, replace the MAF with a new one. Note: Back in the day there were infrequent reports that over-oiled K&N air filters could contaminate the MAF sensor. If you are using K&N filters make sure they do not have excessive oil.

A plugged air cleaner can also contribute to a MAF fault.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. If you have physical debris in the MAF then you have a much bigger problem than just the MAF. It means big stuff is getting by the air cleaner... For any MAF failure check the air box.

Yeah, but the GT has another trick up its sleeve!

Many years ago we got a GT in the shop with a somewhat catastrophic Whipple failure. Catastrophic insofar that a bearing failure allowed the SC's rotors to come into contact and create a lot of metal particles - right into the intake.... or so you'd think.

Immediately below the supercharger on our GT's is the intercooler. Think of a smaller radiator with REALLY tight fins. As it turns out, the intercooler is quite good at keeping the big chunks out of the engine. In our case, we had a lot of metallic (Whipple) debris on top of the SC fins. We carefully vacuumed that off, replaced the Whipple, and the customer was on his way. Compression check on all 8 cylinders were all normal. Whew!

Well went in over the weekend to the shop doing the expel application and ceramic coating on wheels and calipers and the check engine light was gone on start up. The mystery will have to wait till I get it back home to check out in more detail in a few days. Thank you for the suggestions!
