I didn't know where to put this thread, so it's now here. (mods, feel free to move as necessary).

So, McLaren has today announced what will likely be its competitor in the GTE class at LeMans. A modified 650S Long Tail. Pricing to be about 400,000 quid. Makes me note three points:

1. LeMans GTE class in 2016 is going to be an absolutely epic race;
2. Despite Ford targeting the 650S and Speciale in their sights, they HAVE to know those manufacturers will up their games, so I'm certain that the new GT is going to be even more amazing than the advance hype; and
3. With a price projected at 400,000 quid (>$600,000 USD) for this new mini mega Mac, any price under $500k for the new GT is going to seem like an absolute steal.

I really and truly have no idea what McLaren's product strategy is. I like the cars, but maybe it's time to take a couple plays off from introducing more and more models when dealers are already asking $50-60k off MSRP of existing stock of brand new cars. Even if it's $500k, that's a lot of cheese for a derivative of a car (no matter how good it is) that absolutely tanks from $325k.

This is the road version that McLaren is set to produce based on that F1 GTR that won LeMans.

Not sure of the track version.

Not correct: the 675LT is the one that might go to LeMans. The car in the motorauthority article is yet another derivative 650 that's supposedly an homage to the F1 (hence the retro wheels and snorkel). They supposedly will only build fifty of these. As DBK notes, McLaren has got its head up its butt when it comes to marketing, coming out with loads of models to move product that immediately tanks in value

My assumption is that if this is a legit long tail, we are entering a new era of GT-class homologation specials. In many ways, that is much, much more exciting than what goes on in LMP1, because it ushers in an arms race of race-car based street cars.

GT3 != GTE. I looked at the rules for gt3 and they are way different I think the matech and robertson cars ran gt3

What a great era! We are very fortunate that again the manufacturers are coming back to this type of road/race competition in our lifetime. Exciting times.

GT3 and current GTE are totally different. Matech had both GT1 (defunct) and GT3 cars. Robertson was in GT2 (defunct) which became GTE (pro and am, GTLM in TUSC). GTD in TUSC is going to become GT3 (I think). Complicated enough?

The Huracan GT3 is going to race in the Blancpain Endurance series initially. There are lots of various places where a GT3 homologated car can race, but LM isn't one of them.

2nd post to same subject

Matech - Team - cars were competing only in GT 1 in Le Mans, but later they built GT3 cars for their customers. But Robertson's GT in Le Mans was a race car from the US modified to the rules of GTE-class in Le Mans

Well in St. Pete after Kisseemmee and enjoying the weather. I have been a long time fan of McLaren and a valued customer. They are slowely meeting their goals and have started to make profits. I think they had a small bump in the road with the models especially the 12 C and coming out with the 650S.

At least they didn't have people dying in Pinto's and for myself getting backed into by a 70's Ford wagon. Their trans. would jump out of park into reverse and their solution was a sticker on the dashboard to apply brakes when putting into park.

As far as marketing I don't get it especially with the asian market and what they offer there. From the F1(one of my favs) to M-B McLaren SLR's including Stirling Moss and 722 S and a 2011 McLaren Edition I enjoy them all. I won't get into the P1's. lol

I only follow Formula 1 so you gentlemen are more familiar with the classifications of racing. Didn't McLaren recently have several 650 S GT3's racing in UAE's recently?

Enjoy your day.
