what a cool looking BAT :cool i see alot of the B-2 bomber in that. there was another plane built by America in the 40's that was a bat wing too. it had giant radial engines :cheers

I worked on the B2 years ago. I was told at the time that Mr. Northrop had designed the B2 back in his teens. I do not know where that puts us time wise, but the idea of a flying wing has been around since the early days of aviation.

On a separate note, when the unveiling of the B2 approached, Northrop Grumman erected a fence around its property in Pico Rivera California. The fence was in the shape of the B2 which was only visible from a God's Eye View.

What a brilliant concept for it's time. We have the "Mighty 8th Air Force" Museam near us in Pooler, GA. and they have a real ME 262 on the floor.
Another aircraft that was a year too late. (Lucky for us!)

ps-I had a friend build a beautifull 6' X 6' dog house in his work shop once complete with a shingled roof. Wouldn't fit out the door!!!:willy

They still have a tour at Edwards that is done once a month but I think you have to call ahead and make reservations. About a month ago a friend and I located the YB-49 crash site that took five lives including Capt. Glen Edwards for whom the base is named. The crash took place 61 years ago 06/05/48. The following 2 pics are of the YB-49 site and another site where the X-15 crashed in 1967 killing Col. Mike Adams. There are many X-plane crash sites in the Mojave desert if you know where to look.

HHGT- If you worked on the B2 program you must then know Mr. Northrop was ahead of his time and essentially bet his company on getting the government to buy the flying wing concept. Unfortunately his thinking and creativity was too far advanced for the times and he and his company lost out to others (I believe Boeing). He lost fame and fortune in his unwavering belief in the tailless configuration.

As the B2 approached test flight status, the Nortrop team sought and received special clearance from the government to bring Jack Nortrop into the hangar to see the classified fruits of his original concept. He was at the time old and frail. I am told he wept seeing the plane in person. And died soon thereafter but with the knowledge that he in fact had been right in his quest to get people to recognize the attributes of the flying wing. Just 60 years ahead of his time.....

The "dirty" Japanese A-Bomb was scheduled to be dropped on San Francisco on August 17, 1945 - just 11 days after our drop on Hiroshima. Had the German U-boat (carrying the radioactive material to Japan) not shown up in New York and surrendured to the US (because the war in Europe ended), the war in the Pacific might have lasted much longer, requiring the invasion of Japan.
