GT vs. GT40 -- Personal observation.

Busy month. I’ve been off the board for some time. Not able to (conveniently) connect while in Africa.

Not that a recreation can match the original – with GT40 originals in the upper seven figure stratosphere – reality dictates acquisition.

Well, I took delivery of my CAV GT. A re-creation of the 1969 Rodriguez/Oliver car. What a beauty. Superb craftsmanship. Exquisite detail. Extraordinary attention to detail and flawless execution. Hats off to the CAV team. They did an incredible job.

Obviously for this audience the question is “How does it compare to the GT?”
Sadly there is no comparison. While they may have come form the same gene pool in theory – the old GT40 is a bit behind in the engineering department. But it was never built as a “consumer” car. My GT40 is true to the original in so many ways – it’s got all the same flaws I’m sure. It’s not to say I don’t like it – I do, I absolutely love it - but it’s different. Very different from the Ford GT. And so it should be. 40 years separates them. We need to remember and respect that.

How is it? Raw, (did I saw raw?) visceral, aural – Gold’s Gym Work out – but I like getting sweaty sometimes! Something like the old AC Cobras. The one thing the GT40 has all over the GT is in the braking department. The Wilwood 3-pot calipers will have your eyeballs hanging off the mirror if you are not careful.

The car is very responsive in every way. I did manage about 6 laps at the Killarney Circuit in Cape Town. (See Tiff Nidal’s video) The car handled superbly. Crisp, with lots of feed-back. Old school 15 inch wheels with fat high profile tires do not improve the handling. I did not get on it all that hard as we only had 300 miles on the brand new motor. But at 450 bhp it packs a whollop. The car weighs 2,400 lbs but feels a bit heavier. Probably due to the non-power steering.

Part of the drive to my house is about 20 miles long with 116 turns along the way. Drop off to the ocean below varies from 50 to 800 feet. An exciting ride. I just know my “personal best” time will be broken come February when I next visit. Here are a few photos of the car. Enjoy. I did!!

Gordo.

We went with the 302 cu. in. bored and stroked to 347 cu. in. Mild torquey cam -- output aroud 450 bhp. Exhausts made by Bill Styen - of "Ford Racing, Europe" fame. Running a 4-barrel carb for now - fuel injection coming soon. Transaxel is the 6-speed Audi box. The ZF box was just too expensive in South Africa.Feels just right! :cheers

Gordo -

Thanks for taking the time to do the nice write and post some beautiful pictures. It's nice to have the perspective of how they compare. I hadn't really heard much about the distinctions from anyone before.

How functional are those mirrors? My guess is that they would be a little hard to get used to, but they look nice.

Gordo....
beau-ti-ful is an understatement, planning to leave it in South Africa, or will you import it back to the States. Sorry I elected not to tour the factory last October when we were there. Great country, hope it stays that way.
Be safe,
daniel

Gordo, Congratulations! A really enjoyable and interesting post.

It looks finely engineered - great looking engine bay.

Could you post some shots of the interior for our delight?

Are you taking it back to the US?

Thank you for all the kind words. By the way - that's my son Rich in the photo. Not me.

Quote: How functional are those mirrors? My guess is that they would be a little hard to get used to, but they look nice. A: Not functional at all. Visibility in the car is not good. Will probably install a rear view camera. The air cleaner blocks view from the main mirror - so I'm at a loss there too.

I intend to leave the car there as I get down there about 3 or 4 times a year.
Although I am considering one for here and possibly a track version too.
I'll be back in February when David Piper and his friends come down for the 'Springbok Vintage Series'. P3's, original GT40's, Alfa 33's -- a nice mix of cars in a casual yet competitive event.

Cost of the vehicle was a tad over $100k (US). Which when you look at the detail and quality of the components, is good value. You can probably get one for less from other manufacturers - but I doubt it will be of the same quality. I cannot speak highly enough of the workmanship. They actually manufacture most of the parts. The fuel filler, the door handles, the window hinges -- some 3,000 components in the car. The pedal cluster is a work of art too.

Sorry, I don’t have any interior shots at the moment – but it’s very authentic. Well presented in a very original manner and layout.

Now off to blow the cob-webs out of the GT…:biggrin

FB welcome to the CAV family. Great choice for a reproduction vehicle. Check out CAV Canada, Ian Clark for upgrades he has been working on for these cars in general. I'm asuming you have a 100+ car number. Mine is # 47 and is done similar to yours but with out the periscopes. Running a windsor 351 stroked to 392, with 48 IDA Webers and ZF 5 spd transaxle. Completely different cars!!
RAW is probably an understatement but rides extremely well for being for all intents and purposes a race car.
Congrats!!!:banana

Absolutely awesome! What a great post and all the best with the car. Quick question regarding the exhaust. How will the clamshell/paint stand up to the header heat? Is it heavily protected? Thanks in advance and congrats again...Dan

Dan - I don't think it's going to be a probelm. The car runs very cool - I mean 180 is hot! Did not shoot temps on the headers but they don't seem unusally hot. There is lot less heat than the GT. There is a lot of air passing through the engine compartment and with the periscopes - all the more. The exhaust coating also keep temps down a bit. The fiberglass is also waaay thick so I don't think will distort much. It's a vinylester resin glass.

Question, what do you do with a fast car in South Africa, I picked up four speeding tickets from photo cameras on my vacation. Avis charged me 180R plus VAT for each one. And,..... I was driving some stupid Toyota cross over vehicle that wouldn't run 180k. Guess it could get expensive. Saw some nice cars in Cape Town, nothing exciting on the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth.

Thanks for the resposne Gordo. You know I almost purchased a Superformance GT when they first came out to go along with my SPF Cobra. They build wonderful cars and the engineering is phenomenal. I'm running a Roush 351 (bored and stroked to 427, what they call their 427R) and albeit a front engine vehicle, it never gets hot (over 180-190 either). Wonderful job specing out the car, drive it in good health. Dan

bigdan40, Speaking of SPF, I just saw an ad this past week for a "continuation" series to be done by them of the GT. It also mentions that they bought the rights to the use of the "GT40" name. The continuation will apparently be a run that follows that done originally by Safir Engineering. It also appears that the cars will be based upon the Wyer Gulf livery as Gordo's CAV, and in the Mk I bodystyle, vs. their previous Mk II bodystyles. John
