Ford GT race programme to be extended a minimum of three more seasons in IMSA and WEC

Race programme helping Ford Motor Company develop technology such as EcoBoost engines, advanced aerodynamics and lightweight materials

DEARBORN, Mich., July 2, 2016 - With a dramatic Le Mans 24 Hours GTE Pro class victory just two weeks ago, Ford Motor Company announced today that its factory-supported Ford GT race programme will run for a minimum of three more years in both IMSA and FIA WEC competition.

“We wanted to make sure everyone knows that we are committed to sports car racing globally with WEC and IMSA,” said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president and chief technical officer. “The stated goal of our Ford GT programme was to win Le Mans, and we're very proud that we were able to do that in our first year. To commit to a full, four-year assault on both the IMSA and WEC championships shows how serious we are about taking Ford GT racing around the world.

“We are in motorsport to win races and championships, but just as importantly we are using it to develop our engineering expertise and help develop advancements for production vehicles like EcoBoost engines, advanced aerodynamics and lightweight materials that consumers can use in Ford production vehicles going forward.”

“We’re excited and feel the extension of this Ford GT race programme sends an important message to the industry and to enthusiasts that we are committed to global racing at Ford,” said Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance.

“But we remain committed to doing racing the right way. And the Ford GT programme is a perfect example of how we are using our racing efforts to help improve the products that Ford consumers can drive every day. Developing the GT production car and the race car at the same time has been a challenging task for everyone, but it has also showed how the production vehicle side and racing side of Ford Performance can work together to benefit everyone.”

The first-year programme currently consists of two Ford GT race cars in IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship competition, and two Ford GT race cars in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The programme scored a 1-3-4 GTE Pro class finish at Le Mans on June 19, with France's Sébastien Bourdais, USA's Joey Hand and Germany's Dirk Müller driving the winning No. 68 Ford GT effort.

The IMSA programme also scored Ford GT’s first victory in May at Laguna Seca with Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe taking the victory, while the WEC programme scored its first podium with a second-place finish at Spa-Francorchamps, with Marino Franchitti, Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell driving.

Ford GT drivers Billy Johnson, Olivier Pla and Stefan Mücke also currently lead the WEC GT Drivers' Cup standings.

The IMSA programme resumes action this weekend with the Sahlen's 6 Hour of the Glen at Watkins Glen, N.Y., while WEC action resumes July 24 at the 6 Hours of Nürburgring in Germany.

I don't know about the street version, but it would seem to tell us that there's more (performance) in the racing GT to be had. ;-))

Great news!

Big job ahead for a lot of people. What they have done to get to the top in only one year is amazing, but staying on top may prove to be even more of a challenge.

We'll all be rooting.

Isn't is relevant in that Ford must run "production" cars in those races? I assume that means some number of cars will be produced up to the 2019 model year. Assuming the same production limit of 200 to 250 cars per year, up to 500 more cars can be built if demand warrants it. At 400K+ have have to believe the Ford is making some profit from each car sold, or at least recouping more of the costs of the program.

I would say a better chance for forum members to become owners of a NFGT.

I don't know all of the racing rules, but I was assuming you have to run cars based on current production cars. Is there a grace period to run cars that were in production but not any longer. From you answer I would assume yes. As for the other forum I don't understand your question. I think I know which one you are speaking of and only one guy there is consistently trashing the NFGT, not everyone on that forum. FWIW I think the NFGT is great, looks and performance are killer and it has proven it at Le Mans, although IMO the criticism on the sound and lack of a V8 has some merit for the street user. But the tradeoffs to win Le Mans was a good one. That said I did apply to buy one, but don't think I will get a chance since there are so many more deserving than myself. I don't see why Ford would limit production to 2 years if sufficient demand is still there at a profitable sale price and the car still can be sold to meet all regulations.

I expect to see one in your Garage Mahal in the future.
