Well, guess I am confused now. According to the information I got from Ford, there were 1881 GT's built in the 2005 Model Year.
I have full vin numbers for '05 units #'s 2066, 2067, and 2068 - which sounds like the number of units built may have been higher than 1881, and maybe even higher than 2027.
There were no "production" units made for the 2004 Model Year, but, I do believe there were "pre-production" units (like the three Centennial cars) that received VIN tags with a "4" in the Model Year designator position in the VIN.
Would really be nice to be able to sort these numbers out.

the "2" car is at Saleen SSV
We looked at the red "2" car which is in the Saleen SSV lobby in Troy, MI. I did not think to look at the year designation though. We were told it was one of the three that took the stage at the 100 year celebration. It is clearly a prototype/early production car. It has black S/C and a big piece of cloth trim where the boombox speaker goes. There are lots of other subtle differences like the fuel cap, window mouldings, etc..

Jeff, at the recent Dallas Auto Show I saw what is apparently the first of the prototypes. It carries the Serial# 1FAFP90S54Y400001. Notice the 4Y as the year number. This is a white car with blue stripes, forged wheels, black calipers. Looks just like all the other stock GT's. It was included in the Ford exhibit along with the GR-1 and the new GT-500 Mustang. With that 00001 serial number this will undoubtedly be the most valuable of all the new GT's ever built. Also, you are correct in that #2068 appears to be the last serial number for a 2005 GT. I have a data base of some 1800 new GT's and that's the highest one I have seen. I am familiar with you SAAC guys in that I was an original Cobra Club member in 1972 and was grandfathered into SAAC in 1975 when it was formed. Reference CSX 2520 in the registery.

Bob - Thanks for the info. I have seen pictures of the VIN plate for the #1 car on the 'net. I had heard that number 2 was the red car out at SSV. Guess that leads me to believe that the blue one must have been #3. I was there at the Centennial as the cars were staged, but the weather sure wasn't cooperating.....
I've seen your old Cobra a few times at SAAC events at Lime Rock in recent years - gotta love those small-block Cobras!

Got a problem with the first ones being '03 or '04
Not to rain on anyone's parade but isn't it illegal to sell a car as a new car when none of them have been crash tested or emissions tested for that model year? I realize some car companies are allowed to skip the crash test, supplying engineers' calculations instead (as Shelby could have done with the Series I) but I think the '03's were called that just because the GT team promised the bigwigs that they would have production GTs for '03. So they created three pre-production cars. But to play it safe, Ford should never sell these three except for show and display purposes, much as Chevrolet created some 1963 Corvettes while the '62s were still in production and those were called pilot vehicles and supposed to be destroyed (but somebody forgot about that and sold some of them anyway)
Also I photographed the dark blue one at the LA auto Show in '03 and the door jamb sticker identified it as a V6 car so I think at that point they were throwing on any old sticker just to make it look like a production car, never thinking anyone would record that number.

Yes it does, and boy is that thing haggard. It's got a great paint job, but the gaps are huge and not very well aligned.

Yes, it's plenty tired. Door handles are worn out, clamshell latch is falling out of the roof, floor mats look like they're fresh out of an F-150 with a couple hundred thousand miles, etc. Sometimes history isn't pretty and if nobody wants it, I'll take it!!!!! :biggrin

I was fortunate enough to drive the number 2 car (red) and number 3 car (blue) at Gingerman Raceway in Western Michigan in October of 2003. They also had the number 1 car (white) but it wasn't available for driving, only display. We were told that it is Bill Ford's car, and when you opened the doors is said "Bill Ford Jr." on the sill plates. I've got a picture of me standing next to the car at that track that I can try to post when I get home. I also have video footage of the red and blue cars driving around the track. And yes, all three of those cars were considered "2004" model GTs, but I doubt anyone other than Ford Motor Company will ever own them. There was also a silver GT at the track that wasn't available for driving but a film crew was crawling all over it the entire time. Don't know if they were an independent crew or hired by Ford for an in-house production. Be interesting to learn what that silver car was (another '04? a prototype that got crushed? a VERY eary 05? I should ask my Ford contacts).
That was the first time I'd driven a GT, and it hit me like a ton of bricks:

I saw an 05' silver at this years LA Auto Show. I sneaked past the ropes and took a peak at the vin #. It was 0006 and had some wear and tear on it. Maybe this is the car.

Sounds like the car. It would have been a very early '05, and Ford obviously was using it for in-house purposes. It's probably another one that the company will keep indefinitely (for auto shows and such).

Silver GT Test Car
The car that actually set the top speed numbers at Nardo (Italy) was a silver GT with black stripes - maybe that's the one the camera crew was shooting?
This car was CP-15 (Confirmation Prototype), and also had a "2004" model year designator in the VIN. It was car #0018.
