First DIY Service on our GT - Advice?

Hey guys, I’m planning to do my first service on my GT over the winter and want to make sure I don’t miss anything. The car has 47K miles, and I’ve owned it for about three years, but with the other cars in the stable, it only gets around 600 miles of exercise per year.

I originally planned to just do an oil change, but while I’m at it, I figured I’d tackle a few more things. I already have the power steering hose to replace per Rich’s advice, but when I was under the car, I noticed some wetness around a bolt and at a junction (pic attached). I’m assuming it’s power steering fluid, but the inspection of the undertray didn’t show any drips, so it seems minor. I also spotted another hose that looks sweaty, similar to the power steering hose (pic included).

Besides addressing that, should I be doing anything with the supercharger or fuel filter? Anything else you’d recommend knocking out while the car is up? Appreciate any input from those with experience!

I would recommend changing the oil pump belt if it has not been done already.

Probably just P/S fluid blowing around. Replace the P/S hose and clean it up. Wipe it down again in 20 years.

Why not check your owners manual and see what should be done and when. At your mileage the belts should have been changed as well as the fuel filter. Make sure you change the brake fluid and clutch with bleeding. Look at the boots and check shocks for leaking.

While you are at it, check your washer reservoir and the lines to the wipers.

I actually took off the wipers and put on some painted black Coke bottle caps ;)

Seems like that would be a good idea... how big of a job is it to DIY?

The oil pump belt is not that hard a job, but access is a bit tricky. I did this job a few year ago, and did all work from underneath, did not pull the firewall bulkhead. The upper bolts, on the cover, were the tricky ones(small hands helps). The 05/06 GTs are generally very easy to work on. I would purchase a shop manual, if you plan on doing your own maintenance. Also, the oil hose from the oil tank to the passenger valve cover, can sometimes seep oil down the front of the engine. Might be something to check for the fluid film you have on the bottom of the pump. Good luck

I agree that the Ford GT is easy to work on. I did all of my own maintenance. Even swapped muffler (the hard way) and the short throw shifter. Oil change requires removing belly pans, just be sure to leave some slack in the screws when putting them on so you can get the proper overlap.

Shop manuals are getting very hard to come by. They show up on eBay every once in a while. The company that distributed them for Ford, Helm, Inc., no longer stocks them. If you can, get the CD. It's easy to use and there is a way to install it (I documented it hear years ago) without having to have the disc in every time.

Damn Kendall, you are starting to sound like Frank with that comment.
But the comment IS valid for us old timers who have been on this forum for years!

Installing the CD info to reside on the computer took a little research BUT was well worth it!!!

If the previous owner had followed the service interval requirements you shouldn't need to do much. However, if you want to enjoy a couple of days of busted knuckles and frustration, change the fuel filter that will probably be frozen on, and be clean as a whistle when you finally get that mother off. All other service jobs like oil pump belt etc are easy. Make sure you have the new parts before starting work - they're hard to get these days.

Speaking of fuel filters: Has anyone tried back-flushing a filter and reusing it? I wouldn't ordinarily consider this, but if the parts are not available, ya do what ya gotta do.

How can our cars possibly be using a unique fuel filter? Surely there is another application and part number somewhere. Ford didn't manufacture it, did they?
