Ford first introduced seat belts in passenger cars in 1955, but they were such a novelty the the public questioned that Ford was putting out an inferior product (why else were safety belts necessary).

"For a few dollars extra, buyers could order a safety package consisting of padded dash and sun visors, as well as seat belts. (Seat belts were first offered by Ford in 1955.)"

the window sticker on my 66 goat shows the addition of the "optional" front and rear seat belts
they cost $10.46 at the time

I have the original window sticker for my 68' GTO convert. and it doesn't mention seatbelts as an option however the car did come with them front and rear.
On another note, I was one of those young lads driven around in the back seat of a seatbletless 4 door Corvair in the mid 60's when Ralph Nader deemed them "Unsafe at any speed". Now fast forward to todays Smart Car and all the internet pics of it being destroyed/fatals in head-ons by anything larger than a good sized dog. Where is the outrage and condemnation? Could it be their hate for large/safe non-green SUV's is greater than their original concern for safety?

(Trying hard to stay completely clear of politics)
