Believe this same prototype was up for sale before a year or so ago. No affiliation with the car or seller. Just passing along info for any of the spendy collectors out there.

I know that car and the owner. What I don't know is how he got it titled and registered. But he did. That has to add some value.

(Florida. You get your car titled by having a Notary certify your VIN. That is all. I guess CP4 has a VIN.)

a notary? here in CA it's a policeman that's required. seems like a normal notary could be tricked pretty easy......

Gary, I reviewed the Hemmings ad and did not see any reference to the car being a "registered" or "titled" vehicle. Where did you get that information on CP4?

As I recall when these cars were auctioned off at R3 they were sold by Ford to the high bidder on a "bill of sale". And the ECU was modified such that the top speed of the car was limited to 5 mph. I do not believe any MSO was offered as part of the purchase. Do you know differently?

I know because he drives it around Sarasota. CP4 is a driver. I didn't get pics, but here you go:

http://www.fordgtforum.com/forums/showthread.php/25910-2004-Ford-GT-CP4

the Wizard, I don't know how you trick a notary. The notary who verified the VINs of all my vehicles for titling in Florida actually verified the VINs. By sight.

P.S. You can get a LEO to do it too. Or do it at the DMV (called Tax Collector here). But it was easier to have a notary come to my home than to make four 30 mile round trips to the DMV.

I stand corrected.

I just checked my 2008 bidders sheet for R3. There were three Pre-Production GT's offered by Ford for auction- CP1 (Black No Stripe), PB2-1 (Blue w/White Stripe) and PB1-1 (Yellow w/Black Stripe). All of these Pre-Production vehicles did carry a VIN assigned to the car.

I do not have any information on CP-4 as to how , why or when it was released from Ford.

Wasn't CP-4 the vehicle that Mark (McGowan) put all the miles on - and that his current GT emulates?

You just put on a fake VIN plate....or you change the numbers....or many other ways. I'm just saying notaries don't really know much about cars, that's why it has to be cops or DMV experts out here. Not doubting, just surprised.

I had to replace a VIN plate on a Vette once and one of the steps involved the FBI.....just saying this is a big deal in many many ways. And if all you have to do to get your illegal car to be legal is to trick a notary.....well seems easy. Also no consequences. If you fake it and get caught by a cop you're in trouble.....

CP-4 will be at the Sarasota Exotic Car Fest on Main Street Feb 22. MartynL has organized a Ford section of the Sarasota Café Racers at the show.

Seven GTs...red, white, blue, yellow, gray, a black X1, and CP-4; five Cobras; a TT Pantera; and a Cobra-powered Lola T70 Spyder. How's that for a line up? Gonna be a lot of Ford V8 noise on Main St.

There is a story when Ford re-VINd the last of the remaining 789 69 Shelby GT500s to 70 model year, and the FBI was there to witness the removal and destruction of ALL of the 68 VIN plates and the attachment of the new ones.

A Bill-of-Sale was mentioned up above. In the early 90s I built a replica Cobra. In California I knew registering it was gonna be tricky, and making it look like a 1965 vehicle was gonna be near impossible. A 60s car would never need to go through our oppressive smog system....ever....so this would have been highly desirable.

Anyway, after searching around I found a technique that worked back then. I sold the car (on paper) to some firm in Geogia with a Bill-of-Sale. Turns out in the 60s and before Geogia did not use what we call pink slips here. So the Geogia firm then sold it back to me for $300 more (their fee), and they described it as a 1965 Cobra. I took the BOS from Georgia to my California DMV and attempted to get a pink slip. They looked at me like I was crazy cause all I had was the BOS. I explained this is proper for a car from Georgia. The lady disappeared for a while, I saw her looking through a very think manual. She then came back kind of laughing, and saying how surprised she was that I was right. A few weeks later a California pink slip showed up for a 1965 Ford Cobra.

I wonder if this still works, AND, if something like this could work on the vehicle discussed here.....even though it's a 2004? Maybe turn it into a 60s GT40.....lol.

CP4 is titled and drives at normal speeds. It has been for sale for some time now. Originally given by Ford to an auto museum. When museum was clearing out inventory, sold CP4 with bill of sale. When photo of it next to my GT was taken about a year-plus ago, it did not have title. It does now. It has serious appeal to a museum or serious collector who wants to showcase history of the GT; if someone wants to drive a GT should simply buy a production car which will be much nicer. Just sayin'

CP-4 is already titled, registered, and street driven.

Although, IF it is worth a premium for its historical value, it seems to me it belongs in a collection or museum.

Very clever what you did with your Cobra.

There was a title company in GA that used to advertise in Hemmings back then. They couldn't promote that particular service, they just advertised "title work" and the word got around.

This car is a 2004 has a vin but is not certified or validated for "road use". Same is true on the cars from r3 auction. This car was given to the auburn museum in Indiana. 2 summers ago (maybe 3) it was auctioned to raise funds for a building project at the museum. Loop holes in states laws don't change the facts that this car is a cp (confirmation prototype) car, and again yes not supposed to be on the streets legally.

Yeah, it's kind of a secretive world. The ad I found to get the VIN plate never mentioned VIN plates...lol. It said

"Corvette Owner.....missing something behind your glove box? If so, take two aspirin and call me".

Funny stuff. Apparently back in the day to make your stolen Vette not come up as stolen when the VIN was run what you did was put on the VIN plate of some Vette you stole only long enough to pop off the plate which was behind the glove box and only held on with two rosette pop rivets....then you let it go back to its owner, who probably never even notices the plate is gone. And then this was the Vette I bought. The VIN can also be verified on the engine block and on the frame, so I knew the car was good....just had to solve this little VIN plate problem.
