Concert bucket list

I was in Vegas this weekend. We have almost 30 year old friends that live there. For me the best concert venue in the US is the MGM Grand Arena.

Friday I flew to Vegas and saw the Eagles at the MGM. I saw this show in Fargo ND in March 2009. It was good then and even better last night.

The MGM, I think, has the best concert theatre. Just the right size and great acoustics.

All aside, the Eagles will celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2012. What a run. I hope they are still as good as they are now in 10 years.

Henley has to go down as one of the best of the century. Both with the Eagles and as an individual contributor.

Joe Walsh rocks. Imagine one guy with both the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac.

The boss and I went to see Blondie about a month ago, great show too.

My youngest and I went to see Roger Waters "The Wall" earlier this year. I just got us a repeat for May 2012. This is another one of the greatest shows and you should book tickets at the place closet to you :)

No, but Stevie Nicks dated Joe Walsh.

Semantically I guess you could say he was 'IN' Fleetwood Mac.:biggrin

It was the 80's........so maybe twobjshelbys enjoyed that era!

I'm not sure what I was thinking when I wrote that :) Stevie Nicks and Joe did tour together in the 80's (when he brought her to the fountain in Boulder that he put up after his little girl was killed in a car accident.)

Big Eagles Fan, have seen them 4 times in LA, once in SLC, and at Wembley Arena June 18th, 2006. Fry lives two blocks away. Most excellent group!

We could do a whole music thread here! Love the Eagles…seen them several times, but lately they are a bit too “clinical” for my likes. Perfect pitch, perfect sound (thank you Glenn) but last time I saw them they had 12 musicians on stage. And as many on sound and lights. Joe Walsh adds a bit of uncharted “oomph” to the show, but they need to chill a bit.

I much prefer solid blues club performers like Delbert McClinton, Tommy Castro, Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie) and so many others. The talent pool is so deep its mind blowing. There is nothing like live music and I encourage all of you to get out and enjoy some. This January Sue and I will do our 12th Delbert ‘Sandy Beaches’ Cruise. 7 days, 1400 fans and 150 musicians on one boat (Holland America) for a week, cruising the Caribbean! What a blast. Up close and personal…it doesn’t get any better.

There’s not enough space here for my Bucket List Concert so check out “Blues Review” magazine for a show or festival near you. You won’t be disappointed. I’m trying as hard as I can…but there’s so much talent and so little time!

By the way – Delbert and the band played at our house recently – he’s a link to the band’s warm up! Stellar stuff. Bruce Katz (Greg Allaman band) on keyboard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4q8Aiiyz6U

I live less than a mile from Planet Bluegrass (check them out - www.bluegrass.com). This location is the home of the Lyons Bluegrass Festival and Lyons Folk Festival but he also does the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. I've seen some pretty good groups there, but he has gotten repetitive. In the early days I saw Nickel Creek when they were still young and unknown, a young blind bluegrass player by the name of Michael Cleveland, and regulars David Grissman, Ricky Skaggs, Del McCoury and Peter Rowan. My favorite set ever was when Grissman, Mike Seeger and John Hartford did their "Retrograss" album. Wow! Hartford passed away a few months later.

One year we had a "Blues Festival". The first year it was standalone, the second year was co-sponsored with Planet Bluegrass. That year Pine Top Perkins was there. I was wandering around back stage (had a pass) and he was just sitting there, all alone, waiting for his set. I talked with him for about half an hour. What a cool guy. The stories he told were wonderful.

The Folks Festival has some good ones too. A few years ago David Crosby was touring with his son he didn't know he had - the band was called CPR (Crosby, Pevar and Raymond (Raymond being the son).

Oskar Blues (they make the "craft beers in a can" - Dales Pale Ale started 1/2 mile from my house and I helped them debug the recipe :) ) John Lee Hooker, Jr. shows up every year or so.

Paula Nelson (Willie's daughter's band) was there a couple of weeks ago. I got to see them with a small group before they got rich and famous. Now they're too big to come to our little redneck town :)

All that says, see live music. There are plenty of places near you.

P.S. The Crosby photo is a scan from the original negative done with the Coolscan 9000. The John Lee Hooker photo is from my D700 - the best camera in the world for low light conditions like shooting a band in a dark bar.

3 guys who sound like 12 guys.

I know some of you know these guys. Consummate professionals still putting out quality new material after 37 years in a business that usually gives you a few months.

Have seen them nearly 20 times, in various locations. Wanted to see them at Red Rocks in Colorado but a friend told me the scenery is great but the sound is not. Echo maybe?

.

Oh, my. I think you've been misled about Red Rocks. It's a natural amphitheater. I've never been disappointed by the sound there. I'm not a large outdoor concert fan (too much of a chance of getting rained on here) but I saw Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks and Chris Isaac a couple of years ago and it was great.

I was shocked to hear his opinion. Contrary to everything I had read before.

Just an opinion I guess.

I'm pretty critical of sound. I've had a few concerts ruined by bad sound. Most recent was Blondie at the Mandalay Bay - band was way over modulated and drowned out Debbie Harry's vocals. The Pepsi Center (Denver sports arena) is notorious for bad sound. Fleetwood Mac had some bad moments but Roger Waters The Wall was superb. It does depend on where you sit there.

The MGM Grand is the best concert venue I've ever been too. Never had bad sound. The best was the Rolling Stones show - I landed straight in front of their "stub" stage when the original band without all the backups came out and played a small set. I looked Jagger in the eyes - it was cool that he actually made eye contact. We found out he had flown back from London that day after his father passed away the day before and was going back after the show.

The Eagles were at the MGM. Best seats are in the vicinity of Section 11 or 14 low numbered seats in 14, higher numbered in 11 (opposite sides with seats all clockwise). Row G or so up gets good view of the stage.

Best show I ever saw at red rocks was George Thorogood. I bet I've seen a dozen shows there. Never remember a bad one. Big Head Todd was pretty good too.

I can see folks thinking the Eagles are "too perfect" but having played music for 35 years I can tell you it is extremely hard to get to that level . (although we never did) James Taylor is the same way--behind that "oh shucks (liberal) personna is one of the toughest taskmasters you will see and his shows are rehearsed to perfection. The other side of the coin are folks like Chuck Berry who shows up in each town with no band and the promoter gets the locals to back him (ask me how I know:))

Of the folks mentioned above, Ricky Scaggs is a freak talent wise. Nuts to watch. of the shows I would again pay to see:

Journey (only with steve Perry if he could get his voice back. Maybe the best rock singer ever)
Van Halen with Hagar
Tower of Power (40 years of horn funk. If you can catch them do it. Religious experince. buy 40 anniversary DVD)
Toto-that band has been through continuing hell but a band born out of the best studio musicians and it shows
Tom Jones (before you laugh catch him and band at MGM--you will see a lot of musicains there in awe)) the guy is nearly 70 and needs no microphone--the band cooks
Steely Dan--lyrics that make no sense and charts that are impossible to play
Clapton with Steve Winwood--a great combo. good DVD although the horn parts on keyboards a bit cheesy

Twobjshelbys: Living where you do, hopefully you've run into JJ Cale? What talent.
GTDrummmer: If you like Tower of Power, check out Austin's "Mingo Fishtrap" a great Funk band. (Most went to N. Texas State, Glenn Fry territory).

By the way ran into Brian Johnson (AC/DC lead singer) at the track at Hutchinson Island, Savannah, GA a few weeks back. I was giving 'Charity Rides' in my Lotus. If the band broke up he could always be a comedian! Very funny guy.

Not heard of JJ Cale.

I also saw Chicago a long time ago, also at the MGM but in the small theater where David Copperfield does his show. It is a small theater also with good sound but more "dinner theater" seating - tables, etc. instead of stadium seating.

We are lucky in Lyons - it's just "on the way" to Estes Park and most people don't stop but the musical talent that comes there bring lots of people in for the festivals and shows.
