Took battery ground cable off

Underneath is silver threaded washer inserted into frame

Do I clean this washer, it's clean silver, and embedded in frame with white paint dot on edge

Or do remove this seated washer and sand black frame to bare metal ?

Carefull, I think you are referring the the Nutsert http://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Nutserts_s/141.htm that the bolt screws into. Don't remove that! Clean up the surface if it has paint on it.

Thanks!

So, I cleaned & sanded nutsert.

Retightened to turn beyond white paint.

Checked battery voltage and it's at 12.9v v. 12.5v for new platinum die hard (1/10) I just got!

Is our voltage supposed to be @ 13.5v? Or are # in 12 range ok?

Battery voltage is about 12.8 max and when the car is running it is in the high 13s best and sometimes more.

Wait a second, 'ICE! It's been repeatedly recommended 'round here that the frame should be sanded ("the latter"). When did that change??? :shrug

Yeah it was pretty confusing

This nutsert is embedded in frame, I was thinking there was going to be black frame underneath ground cable

I am assuming blackpaint covers this nutsert for others or the nutsert is only in late '06 cars?

My nutsert and bolt were shiny clean, but I Sanded it, bolt and cable eyelet.

I have an '06 and I don't think I had a nutsert when I sanded my frame for a good electrical contact.

Guys dont over think this, its as simple as my MODEL A FORD.....
Remove the bolt and cable, sand down the frame around the thread hole and top of thread ring...if you have a washer, sand both sides then sand both side of the negative wire end loop, this is to get off all the oxidation, then sand the flange or lip under the bolt head facing down....Do we get it , everything in contact to the frame must be spotless........
Old trick, once you tighten everything down and its done...follow me here.....
Paint over ,YES PAINT OVER THE ENTIRE NUT /WASHERAND FRAME FROM ABOVE ...Why ? it seals out the oxidation...........
Use clear on a brush or black to match the frame.......
Then you are set for decades.....
Other method is to use a star washer under the cable to frame and it works, buy then its just more jewelry under the hood....good luck gtjoey1314

Why is everyone sanding on the frame? Make sure the cable end is clean then run the bolt thru a die and a tap thru the threads, then spray a little silicone spray on threads and you have plenty of connection for a good ground. No need to sand anything.

Just my opinion, but these frames were completely ecoated....its great for rust proof, but on very early cars its like a redone 66 vette, its too good.......I get it with the threads cleaning out with the bolt but I still cleaned up around the frame and had zero problems since........it just my opinion though. It could also be I get nuts with, jags, rolls 6volt positive ground mercs and model a's, learned my lesson......GROUND EVERYTHING ....DOUBLE GROUND EVERYTHING, the car starts 10 times better since.....less draw....gtjoey1314

The confusing part is this nutsert....it's hard seated into frame bolthole and not removable. It encompasses entire contact of cable Eyelet and bolt.

So confusion is if it's bare silver what is benefit of sanding frame beyond this nutsert ?

I used sand paper on nutsert, inside and bolt; did seem to work as my check light went off.

Bare metal frame pic might help ...

I get it, but where the neg cable end touches the frame , its that area so just incase the threads are junk, paint in between the threads to bolt arent clean, you have the metal on the bottom of the cable contacting the frame, same as a washer in between.....its just extra thinking.......either works....gtjoey1314
