Market Opinion
There are currently two cars that break the "instant collectible" rule—the Ford GTs and the BMW Z8s. You know the rule: If you buy one, the market swoons at first, and then it doesn't care. They have both done a good job holding their value. Why? Limited production on the GTs, and a lack of a replacements for the Z8s

They only made 4,000 of these potent supercars. And when someone wants your GT, it likely won’t be for less than you’ll get today. Might as well drive it a bit, take care of it, then sell on your terms.

kinda cool in a way but I buy cars to enjoy. Whatever they are worth when it is time to sell is what it is.

I know where you are coming from though.

That "expert" is totally wrong.

I don't think the expert is wrong....at least not in the case of the GT.

The key point with the GT is that there is no replacement...there won't be either, well not in my lifetime.

This is why Ferrari and the like suffer because there is always a better, bigger, faster model just around the corner.

I love the GT if only for the reason it doesn't date and there is no need to change it.....an instant classic.

Well, let me rephrase- not trying to stir things up.

I do agreed that the GT is an exception, but it is easy with all these cars to get misled by asking prices, just like when the GT was new.

I think the GT will continue to depreciate, but the same as it has so far, at a lower rate of depreciation than normal for an exotic.

(And yes, I could be wrong. It has happened!)

The Z8 is an interesting analogy. If you look at completed Z8 sales on ebay, you'll see that most of these cars (MSRP was about $130K) aren't selling, many cars are only bid into the $70's, and the only two completed sales I see were at $74K and $83K.

What about the Heritage and the Z8?

Unquestionably the best reason to own any car!

Z8 Flexing chassis

The Z8 has a pretty widely publicized issue w/ its front chassis experiencing flex and in extreme cases deformation from minor wheel damage incidents ( pot holes, curb hops, etc), with the hood rubbing and not closing

There are hundreds of blog posts, and Z8 owners/Intl BMW Club, essentially forced an analysis by the company and Germany's largest insurer. A strut-brace fix was offered.

I had never heard of this, but was told by a number of people recently

I have seen a dozen Z8s in person and half had hood gap issues. For most this is not an issue if you plan on not having such an incident, but its out there.

re; Value

The back/interior views were widely panned, and the Top sits abit out of scale.

The Z8 is like the old SL 600....it attracts the luxo-GT crowd who value super-reliable sports flagships. Alot of the Z8s on ebay have 25,000-50,000+ miles. These are (were) usually owned high-end realtors in CA, or business owners/developers with cars in fleet, visiting their far flung operations/properties.

No matter how great a car is, after 50K miles...it gets aged, tired and loose. No one is going pay $75K+ unless that thing is pure gorgeous or rips the face off in performace/speed.

Well that makes me rethink ownership.

Z-8

Most of these issues were as a result of the Bridgestone run flat tires (040) which are rock hard and transmit shock to all the wrong places. I've had no issues with mine - but will be replacing the Bridgestones with Michelins next week.

Interesting thread to read.... as it always is when speculating worth of the FGT in years to come..... I would love to say I bought the car for an investment... and never intended it to be for that reason...

... but in a way I did, and my return has been better than expected thus far..!!
Not in a way of MSRP and $$$$$ but in these ways....

My son asks me to go to CARS & COFFEE
I have some truly remarkable friends that I've made here on the forum
I have put many smiles on friends faces by letting them drive
My wife has fulfilled her exotic car passion (she's why we have it)
I have received work partly because of the FGT
...and the list does go on...

It has given me a great return that I never thought I would get.... and I truly believe in the long run, the return will keep coming 10 fold.....

I'm not a guy with a lot of money nor am I guy with a little money.. I've always revolved my life around my family and friends and judge people by how they treat others.... I don't care what you drive, how much you make or what you do for a living..... Shake my hand and look me in the eye and I'll know if you mean well or not....

Drive a FGT and I will give you the benefit of the doubt prior to shaking your hand :wink

THE FGT WILL ALWAYS BE WORTH THE PRICE YOU PAY FOR IT!!!

SOOO............ HOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!
