Anyone know anything about boats?

I was thinking of looking for a new or like new 40-50' boat that my wife and I can spend the weekends on here in So Cal. I figure there are lots of deals right now. I want the best built boat I can buy that has the best resale value. It looks like they all lose money big time, however Sea Ray is what I hear the most about. I would assume no boat will ever hold it's value, just don't want a complete "hole in the water". I don't know a damn thing about boats. Thanks.

Ah, boat ownership......The two happiest days of one's life. Btw, when are you coming home to Rockdale?

Okay!! I will help you out!!

You can go with a Fountain, or perhaps a Cigarette...

Or you can cut to the chase...

Set her up with her 28 year old hairdresser who is not quite sure about his/her sexuality. By the time he/she figures out what it/ he is/she is.. wifey will have figured it out and she will be bored to death.... Which will be much more fun for her and cheaper for you than any boat could ever be...

I assume you've never owned one before then?

If that's the case, be advised that there's ABSOLUTE GOSPEL in the old saying, "A boat is a bottomless hole in the ocean ( "lake", river, whatever) into which man pours endless hours and dollars." 'MUCHO "overhead" - especially in relation to the TIME you'll pbly spend using it after the novelty wears off. 'Insurance, registration fees, MOORING FEES paid by the foot, etc., etc. :ack

May I suggest you LEASE one for a week, or month (or whatever) first and see if you find it's all it's all you THINK it'll be B4U go off the deep end? And, you might want to talk with a few owners as well and get their input about all the ongoing maintenance work (cleaning, etc.) necessary to keep any motor yacht "ship shape".

'Just some things to ponder...

(And you're right. MOST of 'em don't hold their value worth a darn...)

if you have never owned a boat at 40-50 footer is a big place to start! I agree with EP hole in the water. Have owned/raced many and ... well to be positive ... they ARE cheaper than a divorce. But not by much. :bored

FlorIdaho Chris has probably got some good advice. At least two Forum members I know sell boats, one in Florida and one in CA. You might want to check into available boat docks first, see what slip fees are for that size boat/year, and what you get for it (electric/water/cable/amenities). This sticker shock may convince you to rent from time to time instead of buy. That's a very big boat and will take quite a bit of knowledge to maintain and learn to pilot. If you just want a little love nest for the weekends, try a 25-30 footer with twin screw diesels. I think Carver (made in Wisconsin) is the way to go. Your absolute best move is to wait until a boat show takes place and go tour the show. Gives you alot more perspective. Sea Rays are a dime a dozen these days.

Abolfaz, I believe, owns a premium boat company in Florida.

Oh yeah, and wait until you have to fill the 400-1000 gal tank.

It would be more expensive, as I would have to pay out on a lawsuit from the poor guy's family. She would kill him in the first few hours. My wife's first husband took me out to dinner when he heard we were getting married. He wanted to be sure I was in good physical condition, didn't need Viagra, and didn't have a weak heart. How did he put it...."everyman's dream in a wife, but also their nightmare if they weren't up to the task".

Boats?

BOATS? OMG! Been there done that...Tim Cantwell's fleet is pocket change once you enter this realm! So many variables...but Reggie Fountain does have some sleek speedboats. Depends where you are and what you want to do. East Coat is real boater friendly - West coast fairly limited. Do the Miami or Fort Lauderdale Boat Boat Show before making a purchase.

Yes.

Your two happiest days will be the day you buy it, and sell it.

I would look at Cobalt's new Yacht line or Cranchi or for something smaller but very seaworthy Glacier Bay 3480.

Drop me a PM. I am big time boat guy. I run a 62' Offshore MY many weeks of the year. I'd be happy to give some advice. It really depends on what you want to do and how often you want to do it.

Oh, and you don't want no stinkin' Sea Ray...

I recently took the big leap from a 24' Chris Craft to a
70' House Boat on a Lake. Best relaxation & fun i've had in a long time. I didn't know i had so many friends. I didn't buy groceries or beer all summer. Look at many boats. Decide how you want to use it, then buy it...

William S on these boards owns a Sea Ray 41 Express that is for sale. It is docked in Dana point and is kept in very good condition. He doesn't post much but does lurk some so he should see a PM.

You will want to make sure that the slip goes with the sale of the boat... or check into availability..... Marina Del Rey is about $12 a foot for the slip not boat.... Certain slip areas allow overhang ... ie: a 33' boat in a 30' slip... its rare but they're out there. Also, depending on how close your slip is to the Ritz in Marina Del Rey, you have access to all their amenities which is ROCKTASTIC..

If you're thinking about Catalina at all, the straight shot is outta Long Beach/San Pedro.....

REdondo/Manhattan has a nice trendy little harbor but slip prices there are $$ a bit more...

New Port sky high $$ but awesome

Whatever you do, when you pick a harbor check on their "Boaters AAA".. it is an annual fee of usually around $150 for the year.... will save you thousands when you break down and need a tow.

We broke down in catalina and the tow was FREE.... would have cost about $1500.... and we have broke down just about everywhere between the slip and Catalina...

Stand, fully dressed, under your shower at home with the water on cold - . Whilst being soaked, get out a wad of $100 bills, tear these up - maybe tear up 50 of them to begin with.

If you really enjoyed it - get a boat. :biggrin

There's another old saying 'if it flies, floats or .....- rent it'!
