Last year we bought this house after searching through and making offers on endless houses we didn't really care for. This came up, I saw it that day on Realtor.com and we signed a deal 48 hours later. It's definitely not up to it's former glory right now, but 2013 we're gonna start working hard to restore it to how cool it was in 1957.

It was the only house around when it was built in 57 except for the farm next door (which is still there, 13 acres of prime land, supposedly oft the subject of dispute between the 90 year old man that lives there and his family). The original owners took pics over the years and left them with the house, which are really priceless to us. They also left a nice full page article the Detroit Free Press did on the house when it was completed.

Awesome house Dave, the previous house Omera and I lived in was built in 1950 by a wealthy family so it had good bones. You will find your has been made out of much higher quality products and craftsmanship you dont normally see these days. Congratulation Dave and enjoy !

The panorama views in the design is awesome. I bet early and late sunlight are something. Please post the restorations / renovations as they happen. Great house.

Congratulations! What a great house to raise your family. It is right up your alley-avant garde for the 1950s. Now you can add to the rich history of the house.

P.S. I see the original family was both a Ford and GM clan.

Great post, you're lucky to have all the vintage photos and documented history.

You have two of those alien dogs now I see!

Great to have that level of documentation .

Depressing to me that I can remember when all those appliance and furniture colors were hip.

Enjoy it

:lol
Our first house had a pink French door "Frigidaire by General Motors" wall oven. I loved it and repaired it many times to keep it going, but it had a nasty short somewhere and would shock the hell out of my wife. She swore I was trying to kill her. She has hated GM ever since.

Wow Dave...just lovely. Has a Frank Lloyd Wright look.

This area of Michigan had/has lots of cool homes from the 1950's. Most of the big mid century names were at Cranbook Academy of Art back them. Eames, Knoll, Bertoia, Saarinen, so there were at one point quite a few of these. Most seem to have disappeared. Jamal Hameedi had a really awesome mid century home in Ann Arbor before he moved this way.

Thanks! That was definitely a big part of our thinking.

The appliances are a real pain. I just had a guy over last night to explain to me how screwed we are trying to fit a modern oven into the brick wall they are in now. It's gonna get messy in January when they chop out that extra 2" of brick. Every appliance that was in here is made to a dimension no longer produced. Yay!

I love all the old stuff. I bought some of the old Steelcase and Eames chairs from the prior owner. He was an antique dealer. He sold me an old original Paul McCobb table for like $500 then mentioned later he screwed up but since I bought his house he'd let it slide. I looked up similar pieces on 1st Dibs and they were between $6-10k.

Looks like a wonderful house and location, but I don't think I can take the winters over there.

Looks like a great place with some good memories already built in. Now you get to add some with your growing family. Loved the pic of the dog by the pool. I have had a look like that more than once when I saw the enormity of some little remodelling chore my wife thought would be "fun." She is the creative one, I am the "engineer." Thanks for sharing with your GT Family and Enjoy!!

Real world? SIX months and $60K later................................:bored

I don't envy Dave right now!
