Thus the reason for adding the turn half way down that straight. How wild was that back stretch! :eek

That's insane. If I recall, that stretch is 4 miles long correct? I'd love to do that someday :eek

bony, Thanks for the link!

Actually I think they added two chicanes on the Mulsanne straight.

They should of just thrown down some salt and called it Bonneville.

Thanks chris, I didn't know how to spell chicane. :lol

I believe it was Phill Hill who said when asked what is the most dangerous part of car racing, his responce was" driving down the Mulsanne straight at over 200mph and comming upon and passing a MG doing under 100mph. :eek

BTW, in France I always used to remember the straight of Le Mans as "la ligne droite des Hunaudières".
It used to throw me off when they talked here of the Mulsanne Straight.

Why does it say 917?

don't know, looks like he wants to reach over and adjust the radio, opps dating myself, I mean the MP3 player :biggrin

that track rocks :bow luv those long straightaways. the ford GT would be the ideal car for a track like this :usa

Fast Freddy,

That's the track jack!!! That Ford won on, with the GT three times. LeMans!

Bell drove a 917 to make the movie "LeMans" in 1970. I don't know if it's a 917 or 956? They both have round tops on thier cabins windshield.

The Porsche 917s started winning back to back for years, after Ford pulled out and the private Ford GTs were no longer competitive. The 917s were virtuously outlawed by every organization because they beat evrything else. So Porsche invented the 956 and 962, and they beat everyone.

My favorite is the 917k. in Martini colors, the Gulf colors too.

BONY MA RONNIE!!!!!!!! :banana :biggrin :cheers :cheers :thumbsup :thumbsup :willy :willy :rofl :rofl

Holy moelie,

That video is beyond words. I thought the BMV racer was bad, that 917 or 956 makes all other cars a joke!!!!! How did those guys drive that fast for 24 hours. One turn Bell takes full out, without even letting off the gas. He goes around the corner at 245mph+?????????????????????????????

:bow :party :club :cool

I owe you big time for that one,,,,,absolutely wonderful.

To think the Ford GTs pounded those roads for 24 hours at 220 plus and beat the world is so great.

Speechless,

Allan

PS & PSS To think he is driving at near speeds of top nitro drag cars for 24 hours is totally nuts, and sometime in the rain!

DBK,

Regarding your wanting to drive the LeMans track (roads whatever). When I got to Nice, France in 1971, my friend and I were using a eurail pass(trains). But when we got to Nice, I talked him into renting a car so we could drive the Monte Carlo race route. Had a blast in the tunnel over and over in a little shit box.

246 at LeMans

When you view this video keep in mind the white lane marking stripes are about 20' long and 20' apart. When they run together the car is approaching 200 m.p.h.

A couple of racing friends took their Greenwood Corvette to the Vintage LeMans last year. It topped out at something just over 250. Both of them said that was a special experience. They also said that 4 stars hotels in the race track neighbohood would be two starts any other time of the year. But they had a blast on their Pay to Play visit to France. Goodwood was 52 seconds of fun with a very greacious host and lots of out once a year racecars with very familiar faces driving them.

Way cool video. Thanks for the link. It tops the Nurburg (sp) ring M3 video.

The 1000hp Penske L&M 917's that killed the Can Am series were pretty nasty as well. As close to an unlimited race car as there ever was.

246mph=

..........360.8 feet per second...............!

Smokin,

Allan

PS 250mph=......................366.7 feet per second :biggrin

the Porsche 956/962 could never do 246 mph; Darek Bell could've done it in a 917 ;)

the 956/962 were originally capable of 231, and by the end of the Rothmans support, the 952 was doing 241mph.

this Video was from the DVD/VHS called "IN car 956" made in 1984; and contains my favorite race car footage ever recorded will Bell running a 6:47 @ the Nurburgring Nordschlife.

needless to say; the video in question here is 100% a Porsche 956 in 1984... (listen to the blow off valvs, and the distinct Flat 6 sound of the engine; compared to the visceral whine of the Flat 12 in teh 917...

this car was capable of 231 mph on the Mulsanne Straight.

cheers :)
