Anybody ever notice that Wikipedia details 547 2004 GTs being produced?

Did I miss something?

I thought only a few <5 GT were built in 2004, but they were not sold to the general public. What is the real story?

I believe the GT's that Wikipedia lists were built in the 2004 calendar year, but registered and counted elsewhere as 2005 model year cars. They are 2005 model production cars, built at the beginning of the model year.

To the best of my knowledge, there were about a couple dozen cars built that had 2004 model year VIN's. These cars were all factory prototypes and show cars, and none were sold to the general public. Some are in museums, some have been sold to racers to convert into all-out race cars.

I have VIN numbers and pictures of several "2004" cars, and have yet to see one in private hands.

If anyone has pictures or VIN numbers from any other "2004" cars, I'd like to get copies. Thanks.

Jeff Burgy

That info is probably correct. Many new car models of that year are actually built the calendar year before. The VIN represents the model year of the car being sold not when it's built. I have an 2006 # 438. that was built in Jan 2006. So based on a rough production estimate there were probably close to
(400) 2006 model year GT's that were built in 2005.. so that probably holds true that the early 2005's were built in calendar year 2004.

I agree, very cool thing to have. Thanks Chris.

Here you go..

Is this the form that came with the cars that were driven for quality control purposes? From my understanding every tenth car was driven 15 to 18 miles for Q.C. purposes..

Nope...this was issued to the first 50 cars off the production line, as stated in the 1st letter.

I have not seen one either. I wonder when they stopped giving them out.

Chris, that is some pretty cool, rare and probably very valuable 1 of 50 documentation. :cheers

Uhh, I guess I should read before posting.

The first 50 cars off the line were taken to the Ford Michigan Proving Grounds, and given test drives around the track. Those are the only cars that got the letter. As for the 3 names on the letter, any one who attended the L.A. rally likely met Mark M. Scott and Chris are really great guys too. What the 3 of them know about the GT, and racing in general boggles the mind. Spend a day at the track with them, and you would be amazed.

The cars John and I took for audit road testing were given a 25 mile drive on public roads. The paper work we did was not left with the car. It was filed at the shop. I'm not sure if all the audit info got tossed when the program ended. My boss told me that his last few days in the shop were spent tossing most of the paperwork in a dumpster. :eek:frown

We only test drove 1 car a day, and that was only weather permitting.

cool stuff!
