I'm trying to get Chris Coddington to make real knock offs like these to fit our '05-'06 cars. He can make the wheels but needs someone else to make the adapters. Anyone have any suggestions/ideas?

I'm not sure how practical that would be for a street GT. Aside from any safety issues, the adapters would take up space and add weight. How about a bolt on with a cap/cover similar to what Ford did with the standard wheels but better?

So, he can make 18" and 19" wheels? I have order some adapters from ebay that bolt on to the standard Ford lug pattern and have a large threaded round piece in the center that accepts knock offs. If this is what your looking for let me know.

I prefer the BRM look but currently like the BBS wheels that are on the car.

Good luck :wink

I too love the look of a knock-off. I had them on my Daytona and GT-40 and think the look on the GT would be awesome. Ford obviously tried to mimic this with the stock GT wheel but was limited by what the safety nannies would think of something actually protruding from the hub. (The movie Ben Hur probably did more to eliminate spinners from the market than any real hazard issues.) I'm my cars we frequently had to tighten the knock offs with our little hammer and I really don't know how often this would need to be done on a street car. Additionally with an adapter plus a knock off we would now have two potential areas that could loosen or separate. So I'm wondering if something could be provided with all of the look with a bolt on wheel. Just my two cents but I agree the look would be excellent. :thumbsup

Sharp, yours is an excellent suggestion and something I would do if unable to obtain functional knock-offs. Mark Gerisch (GTX1) said he could make what you described but without any evidence of lug nuts so that it would look like a genuine knock off.

That would be great. The wheels are the only thing wrong with the Heritage look.

I don't know if real knock offs would be that much of a problem. Lots of race cars and Jaguars used them without issue. I have never had a knock off problem.

I never lost a wheel either, but we tightened all 4 corners after every session and it was surprising sometimes how much one or more would move. I probably would not have a problem with a real knock off if we didn't also need to throw into the mix a bolt-on adapter. Plus the adapter takes up space that otherwise could be added to the wheel width or offset.

I used to have a couple csx cobra's with real knockoffs and not only did they never loosen you can easily drill your spinner like I did and wire them to the wheel to be sure. I gives it a race look to boot.

I've contacted vintage wheel a couple of times via email for the same thing but no response. http://www.vintagewheelsus.com/ They have 17" cobra knockoffs.

Other possible contacts are:
http://www.team3wheels.com/ac/ They have bolt on wheels for cobras.

PS Engineering also has a cobra knock off and does custom, but I don't have any contact information for Phil Schmidt (the PS in PSE)

I'm a little worried about a knockoff adapter adding width to the front wheels. It would use up what little backspace there is, and I think you'd lose the front lip. A bolt-on wheel with a cover over the lug bolts (like team3) would allow the widest front lip.

My other concern is will the proportions look right on an 18" or 19" wheel on the GT. The GT40 wheels were originally a 15" design, correct? The 17" that vintage wheels sells still look great to me, but I'd like to see a picture of 18 or 19" versions before I buy.

Keep us posted, cause I'm interested in the same thing.

There is NO way that this wheel design will work on the front.
I wanted to go the PS Engeneering wheel route, but had to realize that the large back spacing on the front wheels (50 mm) leaves no room for a lip. Take a look at how far the brake caliper sits out towards the outer wheel edge....

Sorry boys

American racing sells wheels in 18" that use lugs and are similar in style to the Halibrand, take a look.

If it were simple, it would already have been done. Don't discount American Ingenuity. I've found someone who is doing a one-off set for me in the hopes it will generate a business opportunity. When I get them, I'll post pics and info.

You will not get the 50mm off-set needed from any of those...:-(

Phil Schmidt's phone # is 310 534 4477 although I not sure he is still doing the Hallibrand wheels anymore. When he was doing them he only did them in 15 and 17 inch sizes or at least that was the advertised sizes.

The details and pricing are being worked out with a local source and I have found a back-up engineering fabricator who also says he can make the necessary replacement components. I've been working on this since Feb when Chris Coddington told me he would make the wheels for $1500 each and spinners for $500 each. I learned the wheels are the easy part and have been concentrating on someone to maunfacture the replacement components to which the knock-off wheels will mount. I will have knock-offs, I just don't know when, but whenever it occurs, I'll post pics. I hope it's within 60 days, but it may not be this year????

raceline GT wheels?

Just an update on another possibility that I found today.
Raceline wheels has a wheel called the "GT" (scroll to the bottom of the page)
That looks to me like it might accommodate the offsets we need for the GT.
They don't make a 19" (only 18 and 20) so I sent email requesting info.
I think the Rear could work with 18" but I need to investigate if there is a tire that would be tall enough. It looks to me like an 18 rear would clear the calipers at least. If nothing else it give me an idea what a GT40 style wheel would look like with modern day offsets.

http://www.racelinewheels.com/wheels.html#

For information the BBS forged wheels are:
5-lug, 4.5" bolt circle
6.90" backspacing
18"x9" wide for the FRONT
tire 235/45ZR-18

and
5-lug, 4.5" bolt circle
7.295" backspacing
19" x 11.5" wide for the REAR
tire 315/40ZR19

I did some quick investigation on tirerack site and there are NO 18" rear tire possibilities. 305/45/18 or 315/45/18 aren't made by any manufacturer.

Looked at 20" rears and Pzero rosso's 315/35/20 are 28.7" tall and 245/40/18 are 25.7" tall for the fronts, but those are about the only tires that will fit if raceline can't make a 19" rear. too bad..

Here is a tiresize calculator: http://www.powerdog.com/tiresize.cgi

Stock front 235/45/18 are 26.3" tall
Stock rear 315/40/19 are 28.9" tall

update: I have since talked with Raceline, they don't have any rims wide enough for the rear (only 10"), but they gave me another contact that might be able to do the 20" 12" wide.
