I have a family member that is a machinist. Builds custom aircraft parts for the major players in the industry when they do one-offs or mods on military aircraft. Anyway, I was speaking to him about the bolt problem. He stated that if someone would provide him with the technical specs for the needed replacement he could/would make as many as needed on his equipment to exceed the strength necessary.

Since he has made equipment/parts for just about every plane that the US flys or has flown in the last 30+ years ... including the SR 71 ... I feel confident enough in placing this out there and in his hands.

Also, he stated that if there was anything else that we might need he'd be interested in being a part of the "team" as he remembered the original GT40's running at Le Man ... thinks the GT is just a "cool American car".

comments? thoughts? specs?

GIMME!!!!!!!!! With the whole 'safety wire' setup program.

'Can't provide the "specs" though...

1/2 Shaft Bolts

The BOLTS are just DIN 912, M8-1.25 X 25.4mm; Class 12.9, Socket Head Cap Screws.
I am contacting ARP to get some ARP200, M8-1.25 X 30mm, 12 point head, BOLTS; with a 40mm head O.D. and a 34mm thread length. We DO NEED some BETTER washers TOO!!!

The washers have been the cause of the problem, critical that the replacement units are of the correct hardness. Hope Kendall chimes in here.

Count me in also. I do not like what I see in the stock design even with hardened washers and the safety wired undersized bolts. I have also had some thoughts and put some drawings together as to improve this design. I am just hoping someone else beats me to it. I am getting too lazy in my old age to take on new projects. :eek

What we all need to find out though, Tony, is: how screwed are we all gunna be 'warranty wise' by going with these SUPERIOR pieces if something "pukes" down the line afterwards and Ford DECIDES (as a matter of company $$$$ savings - not necessarily because FACTS say so) that these custom parts "contributed" to the problem ...therefore "ppppppppht" to US - we "eat" the new repair.
Aaaaaaah! Now THERE'S the rub!

I see your point EP. I am going to lay low for awhile and see what happens. When this issue first came to light and I took a good look at the current design I decided that this design is a poor one that needs to be improved on. It is my opinion that the hardened washers and the wired bolts may help the problem but more than likely will not solve it for the long term. I think AMB is on the right track for a fix. I am not too concerned about Ford doing anything with it one way or the other and I am willing take my chances if a decent aftermarket solution comes along. Some of the engine performance mods these guys are doing would be of more concern to me than a redesigned halfshaft flange as far as the warranty goes. Does anyone know if this same Ricardo design is being used on other exotic performance cars?

Great information here, and thanks for it. I asked my dealer to order the replacements months ago and have given up on them. The parts, not the the dealer. Regarding the 'warranty wise' concerns, I'd spring for the parts just to have them in the same state as the car.

Are you sure about the length ? 25 mm is less than 1 inch.

I guess I'll call the GT guys and talk to them about the parts specifically... I need to call them about the S car anyway.

Being a fairly new owner I'm not fully versed in the whole problem but if someone comes up with a fair idea of what it takes to fix it.. well, I'm willing to foot the r&d just so someone doesn't get hurt when the "factory" bolts shred out when someone is really pushing the car.

I plan on really running one of my cars hard and have always believed in adequate safety prep.

anyone know how hard the washers need to be?

Dr. Robert Harms:

I corrected the length, It is 25.4mm = 1" long.

Steve:

It is not just the hardness of the washer, but the materal it's made of. It should be made of least of 4720 chrome moly, with a tensile strength of 190,000 psi and a yield strength of 160,000 psi. The ARP2000 bolt that I am tring to get made, has a tensile strength of 215-220,000 psi and a yield strength of 180,000 psi.
