The Alphabet of How I Purchased My GT

Ideally, my own process for buying a GT will have some value to others who are beginning (or side-railed within) the process:
a. I attempted to order a GT from an Atlanta dealer when they were first announced. This was an exercise in futility.
b. We bought, and much enjoyed, a Viper for several years, actually two of them.
c. Beginning three weeks ago, I created a paragraph that described where we are, who we are, what we are seeking (car not price) and what we were trading.
d. I sent this paragraph to seemingly sane dealers who were not asking for a first born son as partial payment.
e. This was sent to ~three dozen GT dealers on a combination of autotrader and e-bay.
f. As do most people, I highly recommend fordgtprices.com since the buyer is otherwise without meaningful data. Interestingly, many of the very nice dealers are also without valid data. Not infrequently, they have been hoodwinked into buying a car above MSRP and reassured that they would receive north of $200k when they resold the unit.
g. I soon observed, as have you, that many, many GTs had shill bids and/or had an initial bid that is best described as "quiet"...Indeed, the "quiet" riot seemed (and seems) to be everywhere. To my knowledge, his banker should not be concerned since I have as yet to see these "quiet" bids come to fruition.
h. Of the (approx) 36 initial contacts, there is an immediate depletion of one-third by a combination of factors:
1. "Our car is mis-listed. We actually want $299k but would consider $249k"
2. "We always get 10-10k above MSRP"
3. "We do not want your car, it is fugly"

i. Of the remaining two dozen, a handful have already sold
j. Another handful does "not want trades at this time
k. An additional group "want a local sale; we do not transport
l. Eventually, there are 6-8 very nice dealers.
m. Some of the sellers need to be educated regarding the pricing realities for their GTs. Explain it to them with diplomacy. They are not dishonest until they have clearly demonstrated that they are. Naivete is not a crime
n. Know the value of your trade...not kbb.com etc but what it truly will bring on the street. You may have to help the dealer understand and accept that value...or...you may have to accept that you have just encountered painful depreciation. It is only money...move on.
o. Establish a relationship with these remaining people. Find out about their dealership, how decisions are made, their history with GTs and their potential to retail your trade...or are they going to have to wholesale, auction or swap it out. This is business...be personable but do not take it personally
p. Understand all fees, taxes, transport costs. Put together a proposal and send it to all.
q. The range of prices you will (I did) get in return can vary by $40k...often this is naivete...sometimes it is greed...
r. Begin to weed down
s. Begin to let them contact you. If they do not, you do not need to pursue them. They are either distracted, unmotivated, have another fish...er...buyer and (in one case) took off for a critical day that would have given them the sale.
t. DO NOT LIE, FABRICATE, EXAGGERATE...or WHINE....be straight, believe that the power ultimately is yours. It is your money, and they want some of it.
u. They are used to dealing with annoying customers...do not be one...make this something that is rewarding to them
v. Present your best offer to others who are in the range but not there
w. They will ask you what you want. Tell them but be willing to act and do not run them off with your cannabis-induced fantasies of power and brilliance
x. Triple confirm the numbers on the best deal. Give the remaining (often 2-3) one more chance.
y. Accept your deal, get the particulars and make your arrangements
z. Write to those who were very nice. Tell them what you bought, and thank them for their time and courtesy.

If you do this well, you will be happy, the dealer will be happy, and, at least in our case, we were immediately offered a slot on the SVT list for the Cobra, Shelby 500 and the GR-1.

If you have a style that is the opposite of what I have outlined, use your style. You may or may not get the car, but at least you will know that you were not being someone whom you are not.

Finally, and you certainly are free to challenge any of this, tell the dealer to not wash the GT and pull off all the plastic. Accept it, visually inspect it, and detail it after arrival. Old shop towels with with metal shavings and Turtle Wax are not going to make you GT look its best.

Excellent strategy and excellent write-up. Proof that anyone who is willing to do a considerable amount of groundwork can buy the Ford GT they want at a reasonable price.

Your right, well written and alot of legwork! One thing I don't understand though is why a lot (not everyone) of people on this forum are so hung up about the price of this car!!! Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of amyone who tries to take advantage of someone but the truth is that a dealer who has the opportunity to make money on this car should take full advantage if a buyer presents an agreeable offer, whatever that might be. The car won't be around for much longer and it's the old American way, supply and demand. I'm an Acura dealer and as I'm sure as 92NSX knows, the early (and still to some degree) NSX's went though tires like underwear. Why, because they were super soft compound to help the car stick in corners. My point is that if you can afford the car, you can afford the tires after 5-10k of miles. I'm not trying to be combative here, just my opinion. I'm sure that a lot of GT owners could care less about five, ten or whatever thousand over sticker they might have paid, they're just happy to have the car because they wanted it. I'm just tired of reading about the "price of a GT", it's that person's business and their's only! I'm sure if anyone asked on this site what someone's annual salary was that people would be offended by that question but it's okay to discuss whether you paid list, 10 over, 20 over or whatever! Let the dealers earn and good luck to all the potential buyers left in getting the final build product coming until August. Again, just my opinion and certainly I'm not looking to upset or offend anyone...BD40 :cheers

Centerpunch:
I believe that this quiet individual is not benign. I had many dealers tell me that they had a bid just below their reserve and that my offer could not be considered due to that bid. I then forward them an e-bay summary of the dozens of cars upon which he has bid. They are angered and appalled. For many of the dealers, this is their first GT, and they find their auction sullied. I would not know about this except that I read about it on your fine website. So I was prepared.

BigDan:
It is very American to sell something at the highest dollar that you can. That is what makes America great. However, it is equally very American to whine and moan about everything all the time. So you put capitalists with whiners. It is quite a symphony.

I receive my GT in about three hours. Two of my four kids know, but my son (10) has not been told. I am going to simply send him to the garage to "get something out of the car." My eldest daughter IM'd me and asked if I was still considering a GT? I laughed and said "no one has that much money."

You can ask a patient how often they have sex, and they tell you without hesitation. But they are offended when you ask them their annual income. I believe the two are related.

Sort of like oil and water Doc! Nicely said though, very articulate!!!

Big day in three hours for you! Congratulations!!!!! :cheers What color did you get, all the options? You will love this car, it is a pleasure to drive and show off. Just beware of the doors getting in and out and giving yourself enough room to do so. All the best...BD40

Great post, here is how I bought my GT.
1. Saw first mock up at Concours and sat in it, determined I could fit.
2. As soon as the car was annouced a dealer posted he would sell his for $15k
over list. This was almost two years before the first cars were released, before the first car was auctioned off by Christies at Peeble Beach.
3. Completed the sale.
4. Paid a bit over window but had the car months before most.
No regrets, luv the car. Yeah, I watched CenterPunch's web site, could have flipped the car, but I buy cars to enjoy and not sell. :biggrin

Big Dan:

Well, that's the sticking point.

I got a great deal on the car, but I had to accept it in pale pink with bling interior. Radio comes factory locked to Atlanta's country stations.

What can I say? I know the art of the deal.

Seriously, it is Midnight Blue. It was not a color I was seeking. I wish it had red calipers.

I had another deal going for a black/silver and my favorite, Titanium. I also had a deal for two reds (one with no stripes). By the end of my adventure, I had a bunch of them at the same price.

The Midnight Blue car was only 90 miles away, and I really liked the dealer (bad emotion in business...which is why my wife gives me a small allowance and makes me wear a football helmet since the seizures began), but by the end, I really was having a great time with all the dealers. We got talking about xBox360, and one wanted to know how to best use his son's iPOD, and then there are the obligatory question "do crazy people know they are crazy?" I said "Yes, we do." That always satisfies people.

Am I excited? No, too old, and too responsible. I am VERY excited about the kids seeing it. My inappropriately young wife loves to wrench on cars (she also helps me chew my food when I misplace my teeth) so she is looking into exhaust, shorter shifter, new pulley for the S/C, computer mods...whatever she feels she can do.

Me? I sit in a lawn chair and wonder about things...like if an "orange" is orange, why is a banana not called a "yellow"...hours pass quickly.

So, since they are related, we know you make a good income - and you are right, that IS personal. Sooooooooo, how often are you going to have sex with your car? :banana :banana :banana

Doc, if things don't work out in your current profession (which obviously they have), I can get you a gig in any comedy club in New York! You've got a good attitude. AZGT, great one liner...

P.S. Doc-because what would a lemon be? :biggrin back to the lawn chair...

P.S.S. Sorry Bony, did not mean to forget your comments! Also great approach, attitude and sentiment on your part. Congrats on being one of the first..

The owner of the dealership has the GT in transit.

It fit into the transport with three inches on either side. He is my age, eyes failing, no depth perception, bad bilateral tremor, active but transient hallucinations and Tourette's where he keeps screaming "Fool!" when I talk to him. That's Tourette's, right?

Oh

I have no idea how he will get his car (mine?) off the transport and my trade onto the transport. I was there when they delivered my first Viper. I had to be sedated. So I am going to stay away.

I have my eldest daughter now convinced that I am not getting a GT so when she comes in Sunday night for my birthday, she will be surprised (in a good way, she is a car girl).

Insurance is a bit problematic. Called my Agent, and he thought I was on hold when he yelled to his secretary "Oh, we are going to score big time."

OK, yes I am a little excited.

The Art of The Deal

Gt'r's - we all bought because 1) We wanted a GT and 2) We could.

The GT is not another "or" car.

It is an "and" car. Or an "add" car.

My purchase story follows:

I received an email in late January from a local dealer, whom I had contacted many months ago, about the "possibility" of purchasing a GT. For some reason they had received an extra allocation and it could be mine. A return email stating I was interested. Followed up by a phone call from the dealer. FIVE minutes of true negotiations. A deal was made a bit over list to insure I gotexcatly what I wanted on a factory order. A confirmation call by the Big Guy Sales Manager to confirm the prices and details. All in less than 20 minutes. Best 20 minutes in my car life.

Many have asked what other cars did I consider before settling on the GT. None is my answer. I tell them that I knew what I wanted, and to this day feel still that I "meant to own a GT".

A forty year dream come true. :usa

Like most of you, I studied the market, followed pricing via the Gt Price Forum, did the internet shopping trip, had high hopes followed by more than a few rejections of reasonable offers. I wanted to be an owner of a GT rather than a market speculator or collector. In the overall scope of things I was treated politely and well by the car sales people I dealt with in this ordeal. As has been stated before - I too never thought the dealers as being greedy, their object is to maximize their company's profit. And as a buyer I wanted the best deal possible. The GT was/is/and will be a hot commodity. Ford Motor Company hit the nail on the head. Right Car, Right Price, Right Market. Cudo's are due to the decision makers would went forward with producing the GT. Even though I don't know them personally - yet - my hats off to them all.

Long story short -- I wanted one really bad ever since seeing the concept.

I must be one of the very few who had never heard of fordgtprices.com. Sorry, centerpunch, but I watched eBay myself (I bookmarked <Ford, highest price first>), specifically a bidder named something like "mallofgeorgiainternetsales" and when I finally saw his bids dropping I called my longtime dealer and said when he's ready to order one at or below MSRP to give me a call. Eventually the call came, I ordered, I got exactly what I wanted. I didn't take delivery until earlier this month, but I still got exactly what I wanted. Was I worried that maybe I'd never get one at my price - you betcha. Until I physically had the car, I never thought it would really happen.

"T minus one hour and counting"

The GT was never a pure decision for me.

It concerned me that dealers were gouging and that people wanted to be gouged.

It concerned me that the car, even at invoice, was/is very pricey; I worried about the future (I recall worrying about being toilet-trained when I was in the crib, felt morose).

(I decided to refer to my GT as my "Ford"...much like jumping off a bridge because you are afraid of falling).

And there are things about the GT that concern me...the heat, the dirth/expense of aftermarket parts, the heat, the fear that someone will think it is a kit car, the heat and the heat.

I have never clearly understood how many they are going to make by the end of production.

Will I eventually lose my hair (separate fear).

I like the GTs uniqueness. I like it being American. I like that I can work on it.

My new insurance agent, Achmed Al Zahabro Jose Smith, really likes the car.

I will be a smash hit in carpool. Those are my peeps.

GT deal was completed yesterday, VIN provided, car being loaded and found that mirrors would not clear. Car off-loaded and reloaded this morning on a different transport.

GT has now arrived, wife took it off the truck (racing trailer) and loaded the Viper. She likes the car a lot.

I hope to see it later today.

Thanks White Petunia.

I just got a chance to take a short look at the car. It is still covered in all of its seals and plastic.

It certainly is more exotic than one initially realizes.

I was, however, somewhat disappointed that I could not find "P"ark. I think the one I got may have a standard transmission; also called a stick shiff.

2 of the four kids have seen it, and one is in transit home from school.

I'm a happy boy.

It arrived. It rained. It was time for dinner. It rained some more.

Tried deductive logic rather than opening the steenkin' owner's manual.

Opened the trunk (?) and found a long wire which I uncoiled and then there was this hose.

(scratched head)

Saw box with abbreviation which looked like "trickle charger"...already had one...thought about the wire that I had uncoiled.

Went and ate more dinner. Watched the rain.

Opened the clamshell and found a bunch of reservoirs.

Decided to remove the tags, plastic, stickers.

Did not help...it still rained.

Looked for the power seat controls...

This thing needs floor mats. Should be standard.

Got tired of peeling off plastic...ate some more and watched the rain for awhile.

Very humid so decided to eat in the shower.

Try again tomorrow.

Still need floor mats.

Carbon fiber parts...how cool is that?

It is just not that hard to purchase a car at or even somewhat below MSRP. The silly hype just didnt last with dealers only getting crazy prices for a short time period. Moreover there were so many cars made that dealers in small markets bought them and then found they were not the ticket to riches when their market was John Deeres and F150s. Simply find a small market dealer with an allocation (or actually any dealer with an allocation at this stage of the game) that is interested in not carrying that amount of freight and wants a pre-sold deal. Bird in the hand and all that.

There is one posted this pm as I type.

Don't forget that ordering what you want is, effectively, a discount as you do not have apriori accept the overpriced radio (or worse yet pay for it and then spend more to remove the speaker) , stripes and or wheels. BTW, even a dealer selling A 2006 on Ebay stated something to the effect " save the 5500 for stripes and have the best painter in the world do the same thing for less than half the price".
